The National Languages and Social Integration Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara said the Police had violated the “national language policy” by distributing forms to motorists in Colombo containing instructions in only the Sinhala language.

“It’s a clear violation of the national language policy and I have written to the Inspector General of Police to take immediate action regarding this,” the minister said and added that he was awaiting a response from the IGP.

“The IGP has been very cooperative with regard to the national language policy. So this obviously seems to have been done without his knowledge,” he said.

Motorists in Colombo and its suburbs were handed over forms by policemen, for a survey on light vehicles entering and leaving the City. (Hafeel Farisz)

My kids birth certificates are in Sinhala. They born in Colombo based on the province language policy it is in Sinhala. Names are printed in wrong pronunciation. A permanent affidavit prepared for this.

Vasu why are you suddenly interested in the public. During the last couple of years you have shown your true colours, you are only interested in serving yourself.

For the Sinhalese its nothing, cos he can read and understand, and he will say its not big issue and will never understand the plight the Tamil people go through..

    Namal Wednesday, 13 February 2013 02:26 PM

Aiyo-- will they re-distribute it in TAMIL & ENGLISH on another day and cause further traffic jams?

    Mason Wednesday, 13 February 2013 01:35 PM

Glad you have voiced your concern after a long absence on a matter of very very much public interest. Your silence was more welcome.

As if all the other departments are following the NLP. No minister is fulfilling their duties. Instead, time to time they make statements just to show the people that they are still holding the ministry.

    Perera Wednesday, 13 February 2013 11:12 AM

I do not agree with JC.

I have given in engish and they have accepted due respect, but the report comes in sinhala only. This is has to be address if we are thinking as one nation going forward.

I think we can not change this culture since SWDRB then prime minister made this imporper way. SO now it is difficult, but can do if all think in one direction without races, nationalities, religeon etc.....

    hs Wednesday, 13 February 2013 11:09 AM

Talking, writing etc is fine. But this should not be end of story! Can we also have some serious follow-up action to make sure that instructions are actually carried out....??

    Yehiya Wednesday, 13 February 2013 10:55 AM

    Anu Wednesday, 13 February 2013 10:53 AM
