A suspect was killed when he jumped from the crime branch room of the Galle police while he was being questioned for taking away a gold chain belonging to a 4 year old boy, Southern Province DIG Kingsley Ekanayake said.

He was caught by several men in the Galle Bus Stand and was handed over to the police. The police took him to the crime branch which is situated in the second floor of the Galle police building.

The 60 year old victim was a resident of Elpitiya and was wanted by the police for several chain robberies, he said. He succumbed to his injuries while he was receiving treatment at the Karapitiya General Hospital.

DIG Ekanayake said that a special probe is being conducted by the police by appointing an ASP, as the suspect died while he was in police custody. (Supun Dias)
