The police women and Child’s bureau has written to the Telecom Regulatory Commission (TRC) seeking a ban on access, via mobile phones, to at least 400 porn websites, an official at the bureau told Daily Mirror online.

When contacted Director General of the TRC Anusha Pelpita confirmed to Daily Mirror online that he had received such a request but added that Cabinet approval is required to implement such a move.

Mr. Pelpita said that so far no decision has been taken to ban or restrict porn sites on mobile phones nor is it being given immediate consideration until a request is put forward by the government itself. (Daily Mirror online)

billion sites active? then 1 our of every 6 humans must be running a porn site... food for thought

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 10:13 AM

how ridiculous! there are millions, maybe even more, porn websites on the internet and there's no way of stopping it! Why won't the police better utilise our resources by actually catching murderers, thieves, those attacking and kidnapping journalists rather than trying to combat things like porn which barely affect criminality!

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 10:15 AM

It is a $10 billion industry in US alone and estimated more than billion sites are active. Best thing would be to introduce sex education in schools.

Adult Web Site Banning = More sexual crimes

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 10:43 AM

technology develops thousand times faster than the law. (given how efficient Sri Lankan Legislators are, its probably a million times) So good luck to the TRC, Police and the Cabinet of Ministers in trying to keep up with the pace at which the $10 Billion industry develops technology.

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 10:58 AM

The ban for under eighteen is worldwide and strict implementation of law is already in vogue, anyone found guilty of possessing these photos and video clips are already filed cases and fined heavily. Technology is fast moving and it would place obstacles and hurdles on the development process. Moreover how many use such phones and most of the people don't use that GPRS option for reasons of know-how and cost effectiveness, if it is possible to ban then what would happen to laptops? What would happen to the mobile and telecommunication industry who would do the cultural policing and what is the criteria?

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 11:41 AM

The mobile browse Opera Mini which is used in millions of mobiles uses a proxy by default. With such software around, this type of blocks would only be useless.

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 11:55 AM

Please ban Internet , GPRS & camera phone from school

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 12:15 PM

Bring a directive to register all the mobile phones like they did for SIM cards. Then bring a rules,
Not to sell cell phones to under 18s.
Not to sell Colour display phones to under 21s.
And penalise those who violate this regulation...
Another important thing is, 1 year back Telecommunication Regulatory Commisssion implemented the rule to register all the mobile users and penalise those who use SIMs other than on their names..

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 10:03 AM

TRA must introduce the system to continue monitoring and block the access to all web sites as such the Middle East countries doing.

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 03:14 PM

    Well restrictions! access is important.
This is a democratic Country, let the people choose, let them select what is right and wrong, any one over 18 has that right.

Body chemistry is important and this should be a open issue

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 03:34 PM

Why not ban the internet as well? Just banning everything in sight won't address the issues! It will only make people more adamant, to break the rules ...

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 07:29 PM

    Education is better than restrictions!

    Thursday, 13 May 2010 04:01 AM

Society is anyway corrupted in this time! Therefore if you have to ban it has to start with even unrated normal movies to TV series where they show upto people getting ready for sex. Apart from that you need to ban the half dressed and bikini dances also in non-porn programes or shows. Then of course there might be a change but its not practical because it is a Global Peverseness in the name of Glamour! So lets allowa porn sites and movies. It has become a freedom of choice and democracy to live in a good way or not!

    Thursday, 13 May 2010 07:37 AM

Necessary evil is also a part of day to day life.

    Thursday, 13 May 2010 07:48 AM

Yes, I agree with Nan. Certainly the number of sites can not be a billion.

    Thursday, 13 May 2010 10:07 AM

Educational institutions banned cell phones and esp. camera phones long ago but the implementation is very slow because policing is not the work of the academics and they can't call police for every offence committed in the campus. It is better to call the police spl. desk and give information with a secret code! This is nothing to do away all facilities available on the net. The same sites may block some useful studies on obstetrics and gynecology Urino reproductory and venerial disease studies..

    Thursday, 13 May 2010 10:12 AM

Teachers are not under eighteens; they may have their own personal dating problems; that doesn't mean they should share it with their students; if any such information you can send to the police and they will be squared in time; it is nothing to do with the blocking of all sites; there are unmarried spinsters over aged bachelors working as teachers and they shouldn't all become suspects overnight!

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 08:23 AM

Commendable move !. Any way it'd be a very difficult task to eradicate such things completely. Youths nowadays know how to go along with the modern technology . They may find out alternatives before long. Actually ,everything cannot be solved merely through law. It is up to intellectuals to come up with some solutions for such downfall of morality in our society.

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 07:09 AM

usually this kind of strategy results in a black market where the stuff can be bought for a high fee.

Its similar to what u can expect if alcohol is banned.

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 07:10 AM

However as a spin off of banning, you will find a technologically smarter generation in a few years as people will learn how things work while trying to get around any such barriers.

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 07:22 AM

As usual our guys sit on everything that should have been banned, suddenly wake up to realise it has gone out of hand! technology is way ahead of their move!

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 07:38 AM

Of course, there should be a check on these kind of thing. By putting a ban on 400 out of million ( very unlikely such number ) we make a start to show that there is a positive step towards better society. It is best now to to start some -where without out waiting while doing nothing.
LETS CREATE THE AWAIRNESS, AT THE BEGINNING.

    Yoosuf

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 07:43 AM

With high tech. this is something that needs to be confronted.

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 08:01 AM

Very true. Similar things have happened in Japan and look where they stand now!

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 08:10 AM

Just another run in the mill.. What difference will it make.. those who watch these will find a way... No point putting up bans.. It's all in ones state of mind...

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 08:19 AM

No point of banning Porn website they should educate parents and tell them to keep eye on kids when there on the NET.

Adult Web Site Banning = More sexual crimes (I hope anyone get my point).

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 06:51 AM

What is the use of banning just 400 out of Million web sites on the internet. I guess instead of banning they should implement a proper education system to the public.

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 08:40 AM

Nothing is Impossible to do, assume this is a first step to this issue, good work police women..!!

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 08:50 AM

    ban using mobile under 18

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 08:51 AM

Usually, the tendency is when restrictions are placed an insatiable urge emerges in one to indulge in such activities, nevertheless what is important here is educating those susceptible to such activities and this should start with the school as most of the schools are equipped with computers. It has to be a collective effort of the teachers, parents and the state media depicting the detrimental effects of porn websites. The sad part of the story is even some of the parents and teachers indulge in such activities.

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 09:11 AM

You cannot ban the use of mobile phones by age. It is now a necessity. Banning will only create a higher demand and demands are always met. The best way is to educate people. If it is part of everyday life then people wont go hunting for it as much.

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 09:13 AM

What were the various Ministries dealing with Religious affairs doing? Shouldn't they have moved in this matter before the Police? As for the Cabinet, it is too busy with Constitutional Amendments to give the President a third term though he is yet to start on his second term.

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 09:21 AM

    something is better than nothing

    Wednesday, 12 May 2010 09:27 AM

Imposing bans will only move actions into higher grounds. Best example are found from the Middle East, though you hardly hear about 'em due to media restrictions.
Suggest to braoden our education system, to include better values and morale.
