Looks like the only offence was serving liquor at the dawn of Poya day but all other "activities" going on in the Night Club are not taboo!

    Samayan Friday, 06 April 2012 04:21 PM

you are given 353 days per year for selling liquor.talking for 12 days is useless.they do not worry for country's culture but worry for money.

    citizen1 Friday, 06 April 2012 06:53 PM

The hypocrisy of Sri Lanka never ceases to amaze me

    citizen1 Friday, 06 April 2012 06:54 PM

...or try this, you can't kill animals but you can kill people.

    citizen1 Friday, 06 April 2012 06:56 PM

Apparently the moral police agree with the latter of all your analogies.

    Crazy! Friday, 06 April 2012 07:54 PM

Let us tell the world how GREAT we are! ONLY on Poya days we don't drink liquor and we never touch meat! Only fish guys! (fish come from water therefore it is not under "meat" category, even though we kill the fish in order to consume) Rest of the days we party with plenty of alcohol and meats!

    cxcb Saturday, 07 April 2012 01:15 AM

well, stop all these nonsense !! Accept, SL is a multi ethinic country and stop all these religious restrictions on commercial commodities. The more rules, allow more loop holes and illegal activities.
If buddhists shouldnt eat meat on poya days so be it but let others to enjoy their rights.

What will the police do if a high profile politico or his children gives a order to release him/them?

    SAM Saturday, 07 April 2012 02:15 AM

Aiyao poyata paase ne aparade ..the more you restrict more you drink People should be educated with social responsibility

    kunjan Friday, 06 April 2012 03:44 PM

hello Sri Lanka Police you have lot of things to catch not alcohol. But we know you cant do due to prevailing political issue.sorry.

    truealf Saturday, 07 April 2012 06:59 AM

Lutronman,sltk2004 your are 110% Right. What about selling Eggs??? Not only poya day, we should make illegal selling alcohol all the year. Why we need national income from killing the people from alcohol. No Monk will talk about this. They are all blind some time in something.

Lankan Patriot Saturday, 07 April 2012 07:11 AM

Or, must have fallen off with a Politico or a son of a Politico!!

    Mad Cow 681 Saturday, 07 April 2012 09:21 AM

Not everyone is Buddhist in this country. And I do not say anything is wrong with being Buddhist, but be fair in your comments.

jagath leanage Saturday, 07 April 2012 09:24 AM

Super power politco or sons wouldnt have allowed to go inside.
    Desahappremiya.

    manike Saturday, 07 April 2012 11:24 AM

You also can sell processed meat like sausages, luncheon meat, corned beef, ham etc. What a foolish idea to prohibit selling fresh meat on Poya day? What about non Buddhists?

    Nodrog Saturday, 07 April 2012 02:31 PM

    Idiot!

    Nodrog Saturday, 07 April 2012 02:34 PM

Damn right CXCB. Why is religion being shoved down our throats?

Tony Haniffa Saturday, 07 April 2012 03:18 PM

If i was mayor of colombo first i will close all the Casino,s because all the gamblers addicted .

    Lisser Friday, 06 April 2012 09:38 AM

Pls dont circulate lies. Both are prohibited. If it happens you can complain.

    faqi Friday, 06 April 2012 07:30 AM

    Morality, cannot ever be legislated.

shantha madawela Friday, 06 April 2012 07:34 AM

only selling liquor is prohibited on poya day...?

    lutronman Friday, 06 April 2012 08:20 AM

It is like this. You cannot sell fresh meat but you can sell fresh fish on a poya day! Explain that.

Shelton Fernando Friday, 06 April 2012 08:23 AM

These are political laws. If you can get 25 additional votes by passing a stupid law like this our rulers go for it. We will never come out of our third world status this way. Go to a supermarket and see the level of liquor sales day prior to the Poya Day - those wants it will have sufficient / excess stock on the Poya day than a normal day. Stupitidy at its utmost of those passing such laws!

    subbiah Friday, 06 April 2012 08:50 AM

Hit the sellers and consumers in their pockets where it hurts them.

    Theepan Friday, 06 April 2012 08:57 AM

First of all why do you have a night club in a Bhudist country???

    Anton Friday, 06 April 2012 09:23 AM

This is another stupid tradition that holds not merit. As a matter of fact most liquor sales are recorded on the day before poya. We must do away with religious shenanigans.

    xlntgson Friday, 06 April 2012 09:36 AM

    Idiosyncracy!

    Supun S Friday, 06 April 2012 07:23 AM

    Excellent!

    Mad Cow 681 Friday, 06 April 2012 09:58 AM

And to confound the matter further, you can buy frozen meats, like chicken sausages, which are supposed to have been made from chickens. As for the raid on the club on Duplication Road: surely the police have known that it always stayed open past the shut-off hour.

    sltk2004 Friday, 06 April 2012 10:59 AM

This is a minor issue when compared to things going in the country. What's more destructive: having a shot on a poya day or destroying our natural forests by cutting roads through them or pilfering public money or pardoning people convicted of murder etc?

    Dee Friday, 06 April 2012 11:12 AM

    must have lost 'contacts'

    MW Friday, 06 April 2012 11:23 AM

    miserable !!

Shaik Ahamath Friday, 06 April 2012 12:44 PM

There is nothing more profitable than when you ban it. In USA there was more alcohol consumed during the Prohibition Period than after it was lifted. Consequently there was also more crime then. My sympathies are with the club as it is difficult to plan and budget because Poya days fall on different days of the month and one cannot know well in advance when. As the approximate day can be estimated, I suggest that the holiday observance is on the Monday following which could be catered for quite easily. Also, the staff would appreciate the long week-end.

    Nodrog Friday, 06 April 2012 01:14 PM

It should be up to the individual to decide whether to drink or not. Anyway banning the sale will not stop those who want to drink from drinking....only make the black-market richer.

Trehan Munasinghe Friday, 06 April 2012 03:08 PM

Simple if you want to drink after 12 midnight Pre Poya at a club buy/ sell the booze early so it won't inconvenience the patron or Club/Bar owner... also don't sell during the 24 hours of the Poya day , respect the Law and Regulation. Cheers !!

    Jayantha Friday, 06 April 2012 03:26 PM

What about Kandy car race? Does Sri Lanka have different laws different people?
