A tense situation has developed in Chilaw as a group of protesting monks were blocked by the police from reaching the Munneswaram Kali Amman Hindu Temple where the animal slaughter ritual is expected to take place today.

The riot police have been deployed in the area and the police have prevented the group of monks from reaching the Temple. The monks, angered over the police blockade are currently seated on the road, refusing to move from the area till the ritual is stopped.

Around 300 goats and a large number of foul are to be slaughtered at the event today. (Daily Mirror online)

    Raj Wednesday, 25 August 2010 10:45 AM

I am a Hindu, but I do not agree with this animal slaughter. But there is an issue here. Why should Monks interfere with this. This is like insulting the believes of Hindus, whether what they are doing is right or not.

roshan raz Wednesday, 25 August 2010 08:39 AM

the monks there are not allowed to go on protest.

    TDDC Wednesday, 25 August 2010 07:33 AM

Mohamed Shafraz Wednesday, 25 August 2010 07:03 AM

Buddhist monks also has rights to express their thoughts and opinions, also have rights to preach what their religion teaches, but should be peaceful way, in dialogs. but should not be violent. Killing animals for other then food or self protection is not accepted in ISLAM, but I can't comment on other religions. motive of killing Cows in holy Eid is distribute meat among poor. I guess hindus also do the same. if it is the motive it is acceptable.

    lizzett Wednesday, 25 August 2010 07:03 AM

we are not muslims to do it the halal way

    Alice Wednesday, 25 August 2010 11:08 AM

Why is it that the people of our country dont understand that we, Sri lanka, is a multi ethnic country. And that means that theres going to be different religions, following their own cultures and rituals. What may seem right to one religion may not seem the same way to another. if the hindu people or the muslim people want to sacrifice animals.let it be. The meat is eaten by the people. No one sacrifices meat otherwise in our country. Nobody is mocking the monks for their different rituals...why look for problems? is it impossible to respect another religion for these people???

    gowravi Wednesday, 25 August 2010 07:00 AM

    I agree with u Ravishan

you call these barbarian acts a ritual? Even the All Ceylon Hindu Congress (ACHC) condemns this act. If Sathi pooja takes place here, Can you justify it?

    anura Wednesday, 25 August 2010 06:35 AM

    live without eating then

    Reality Wednesday, 25 August 2010 06:31 AM

Oh so killing animals for food is better than killing animals for religious ceremonies ?
haha how does that logic works ? in the end its all "KILLING" whether its ISLAM/CHRISTIANITY/HINDUISM/BUDDHISM!

Oh! Ramazan is very near. If the Monks wants to stop the animal slaughter on this day we will find them seated all over the country. It will be a very funny sight

    Holman Wednesday, 25 August 2010 01:26 PM

Good one. These monks love sea food, so they wont like to protest against catching fish !

    Gunawathie Wednesday, 25 August 2010 01:27 PM

Saliya Wickramasuriy Wednesday, 25 August 2010 02:22 PM

I'm a Roman Catholic, and I support the monks' move.

Saliya Wickramasuriy Wednesday, 25 August 2010 02:24 PM

So the halal way give no pain to animals, and animals go to to heaven, hehehe?????????????????????

Saliya Wickramasuriy Wednesday, 25 August 2010 02:32 PM

Don't insult the monks. I'm Catholic and understand the the primary job of the clergy is to tell the world to live a moral life.

    Sally Wednesday, 25 August 2010 03:21 PM

The monk are .....without a cause.

    citizen1 Wednesday, 25 August 2010 03:24 PM

    Suganth Wednesday, 25 August 2010 07:38 PM

These types of barbaric acts (slaughter rituals) must be banned by law!

    halawathabanda Wednesday, 25 August 2010 08:53 PM

    Ray Wednesday, 25 August 2010 10:18 PM

Do Buddhist monks eat meat of killed animals?

    Ray Wednesday, 25 August 2010 10:42 PM

Well said Ruwan. All religious clerics please join hands to protest the injustices happening around us everyday!

    Dr I.M.C.Fernando,UK Wednesday, 25 August 2010 11:53 PM

Cruel practices such as this, in the name of religion, should change with education, knowledge and enlightenment, in this scientific age!

Vishan Alvis Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:32 AM

Brilliant..These same monks can then line up on the 10th Sept, as another good tidy sum of goats will be slaughtered by the Muslim faithful as they end the holy eid!!! I fail to understand the sudden urge my these so called "Monks" , have joined P.E.T.A.......

cool heart Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:49 AM

We are killing millions of fish everyday.....why dont monks protest for that...

kks perera Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:48 AM

silliest ever comment --do plants cry ?perera

    sampathk Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:46 AM

slaughter of animals for sacrifice is bad. monks breaking the vinaya is worse!

    sltk2004 Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:43 AM

    @Leslie
Don't drag un-related topics to the discussion. If my memory is correct the clergy was against this last year also - but not this much. What ever the reason - this is an illegal act. Animals can't be killed like this - there are rules that must be observed.

And why do you compare your general to animals ? General has the family, party, lawyers to act on his side, but do these animals have that benefit ? Can they talk ?

    IQBAL Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:42 AM

Killing innocent ppl is not a SIN? and the best part is, no justice for the victims. will the religious leaders or the monks come forward for those??

    D.P.Liyanage Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:41 AM

Do monks eat mutton or Chicken? I suppose majority of monks are not vegetarians. Then why these type of things happen?

    TRUTH Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:37 AM

There's no wrong in killing an Animal as far as it is done the Halal way. Where the animals are not beaten or hacked to death.

Also many that say Halal is not actually halal as the Animals are killed infront of the others who are kept to be killed. This is also very wrong as the other animals are made known that they are next inline to be killed.

    Waruna Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:36 AM

People who like to eat meat on Full MooM.

    sham Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:49 AM

Killing these animals for food is not a sin,
The Almighty God has given us flat teeth and pointed teeth
flat teeth is for - VEG. foods
pointed teeth are for - NON. VEG. Foods

    Waruna Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:29 AM

    Leslie Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:21 AM

In all parts of the Country the Hindus perform these rituals. It has been going on for centuries. Why the sudden interest by the monks to stop this. Buddhist clergy please do something better with your time. You could have marched to Temple Trees when our National Hero the Genreral was put in Jail.

ping pong Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:21 AM

There in no gain from killing animals. Any way its a sin.

I thought we are a civilized nation??? what have these innocent people have to do with individuals karma????

    Wasantha Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:16 AM

This is a traditional ritual and slaughter of animals has been happening for a long time.Whatever the purpose behind it, this is a barbarian act. I do not know why the religious leaders opted to kill animals to satisfy the God.

    ruwan Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:12 AM

its been happening for 100s of years ... we cant stop fishing, farming and killing other lives for food purpose ... kill and eat a simple human survival practice for 1000s of years ... we all know that even plants are living species ... they do breath :-) for me even eating vegetables comes under killing another life for food ...

    Rila Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:50 AM

Everything has got a limit. None should be allowed to exceed that limit under any guise. You can peacefully preach against animal slaughter or any other crimes . No one shall take the law into their own hands and act to disturb the hard won peace, harmony, freedom/ liberation. Please be known that your freedom ends where the other man's nose begins.

    happzz Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:51 AM

ok killing for food is some thing... what about killing for nothing?? they have to be stopped.. this isnt India. remember what happened to sathi pooja.. could you justify it when so many women burned alive just because they lost there husbands. ??? . these rituals has to be changed as the world advances.

    Ajith Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:54 AM

Would lord Buddha act the same way as these monks? are these monks really following the teachings of Lord Buddha?

Did Lord Buddha say they should protest this way and protest in this manner?

    ROHAN Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:56 AM

Monks should not protest as it is not the Buddhist way to do things. If animal slaughter ritual is not against the law of the land, police should take action against the monks. As Buddhist we should respect the law of the country.

    jay Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:56 AM

MONKS ARE ON THE STREETS EVERY DAY

    Ramzeel Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:58 AM

Let the venerable monks rally around to stop the killing of innocent humans in whatever way, be it the white van, human conflict, jealousy, and the most important the Govt. sponsored goons.

    happzz Wednesday, 25 August 2010 05:59 AM

killing animal for food is somthing.. killing them for nothing??? ITS A SIN even accrding to ISLAM AND CHRISTIANITY

    guru Wednesday, 25 August 2010 06:13 AM

Protest is ridiculous. Hindus must have rights to do their rituals

    Ravishan Wednesday, 25 August 2010 06:14 AM

True. Why can't these monks promote vegetarianism and then take up animal protection.

    srilal Wednesday, 25 August 2010 06:14 AM

    STOP animal slaughter NOW...

    Jayamanna Wednesday, 25 August 2010 06:21 AM

    Talk sense man!

    bernard Wednesday, 25 August 2010 06:21 AM

They are still practicing animal sacrifice in the 20th century. We are supposed to be civilized and educated not to believe in such stupid things.

    Supriya Wednesday, 25 August 2010 06:22 AM

Is this sort of slaughtering allowed in US and the west?

    Saradial Wednesday, 25 August 2010 06:23 AM

Well said ruwan, you are 100% correct

    Reality Wednesday, 25 August 2010 06:27 AM

Monks protest because the Kovil is getting more profit than the vihara, this is the reality people, none of them are doing it for religion or for the god. its all for their own benefits.
