The opposition has sent a signed petition to President Mahinda Rajapaksa demanding the release of DNA leader Retired General Sarath Fonseka from military custody. Fifty UNP and DNA MPs including opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe have signed this petition.

DNA General Secretary MP Vijitha Herath told a news conference that General Sarath Fonseka is detained in military custody in an inhumane manner.

“Now we are celebrating Vesak. It is commonly preached nowadays that hatred never ceases by hatred. Then, we believe that Gen. Fonseka should be set free with immediate effect. He is the leading war hero,” Mr. Herath said.  (KB)

In what country law ?? Once he is proved innocent, then he will be released. Now he is in custody with evidence for some cases.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 09:02 AM

I hope that the ball will go in reverse swinging in few years.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 09:26 AM

You all talking about justice and SF should be face to it. then what about other politicians in the government. how many of them should be in the custody? think before you comment, SF is a hero who ever say anything. it is a world known truth. you cant ignore it any more.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 09:27 AM

Ranil W. diverting attention from the re-organization of the party.
All this time he was not saying anything about the General. Sajit and Dayasiri please take note.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 09:30 AM

Funniest thing is all three Major Generals who are sitting on judgement are people who have been punished by the General when he was the Commander.
Can you expect a fair trial.???????

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 09:41 AM

A lot of people around here believe so. We are all entitled to have our beliefs, and they dont necessarily have to be reality based. :)

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 09:43 AM

Majority of the nation voted for MR! I rather doubt they are crying for SF. May be a few souls. Certainly not the majority.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 09:43 AM

    well said jix..i agree with u 100%

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 09:46 AM

All criminals and rogues deserve what they get. Let all beware.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 10:03 AM

Its better even to make a complain to the world Court, not only General Fonseka's matter, everything all undemocratic things happening here in Srilanka

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 10:08 AM

I totally agree with mohandev, RW has got jittery the guy wants Gen to take the leadership of the UNP and the opposition, He does not want any one from the UNP to be the leader.. RW and the team wants to ride on poor Gen..

Let him just be a MP.
    Jaya

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:59 AM

general fonseka should be relesed, MR and the general should work together, as a team they achived a greatest victory, Mr. Fonseka, is a brave commander, the greatest in the world regime said one year ago, and we sri lankans truly beleives it todate, no matter, they try to tarnish Mr. Fonseka's character,it reflects badly on us as sri lankans globally, sri lanka is 70% buddhist country, and are the sinhala race behaving like true buddhist ?? vesak is a great holy day to buddhist, Government should relese Mr. Fonseka, after all we are not going to live for ever, your wordly things will remain when you die, only the good and the bad deeds will look after you after life.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 10:15 AM

Yeah, more to come from his hidden stash. $$

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 10:17 AM

SF and his supporter has big misunderstanding on "MAJORITY"

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 10:17 AM

Our country is in trouble, fighting among us can cause more problems, Gen S F did not fight with the Gov't he only contested the Election.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 10:19 AM

Yes, that was his wish few hours before taking him to custody.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 10:22 AM

But Upul, according to the same law, any person cannot be arrested without the charge sheet, but it does for SF.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 10:43 AM

Dilu, the law says you have to read the charges against you when arresting someone. The charge sheet will be presented to the courts. There is nothing illegal about SF’s arrest. Otherwise it can be challenge it in courts.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 10:58 AM

General ruined our heroes image and country image foolishly. It is aired on TV during the Election period. It is enough to keep him prison for a life time.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 06:36 PM

The General is a political prisoner, incarcerated out of sheer hatred.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 10:27 PM

They are keeping him in custody because they know how popular this man is.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:16 AM

Dear MR, whatever you do, DO NOT release the General (SF) without a trial. He needs to answer to all his criminal doings and also for his acts of treason. Justice is for everybody and even politicians should not be above the law. Also, if you release the General he will work against Sri Lanka Please do the right thing and charge him for the crimes he has commited, and also find Dhanuna and jail him too.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 07:25 AM

You should politely request mahinda rajapakshe to release him. Do not demand.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 07:28 AM

Does any political party have any rights to demand a person in custody for his release with a petition or without before he is proven innocent ??

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 07:28 AM

A great army Genaral,a real war hero of Srilanka is been jailed overnight , accused by the government as he contested the Presidential election!!!What type of country we are living in.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 07:33 AM

everybody except those who are reluctant to face the truth seek his release.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 07:35 AM

Majority of the nation are crying silently for this great injustice done by the rulers for this gallant soldier Gen. Fonseka.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 07:41 AM

True the general, MR, GR and many others had no option but to take a violent path to defeat a ruthless terrorist force, however, if we are a country that actually reflected Buddhist principles in our actions, a monster like Prabhakaran would have never been created in the first place. Please do not pretend to understand and quote a priceless dharma when convenient to you…

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 07:51 AM

RELEASE SF UNCONDITIONALLY, this is the expectation of Lankans.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 07:59 AM

More to come. old boy. more to come. This is only the beginning.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:12 AM

Genral asked to take him to custody.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:12 AM

What ever they say, what ever he did , please, please release him he is our main hero.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 07:22 AM

It will be good to have a referendum of whether SF is to be released or not. Im sure many, altho they voted for the UPFA, condone this act of imprisoning the most important responsible for the war victory.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:19 AM

He should be free until they prove that he is guilty. Not otherway around Gamini.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:25 AM

Well said Roshan....Gamini don't you know that in a democracy, any suspect is innocent until proven guilty?

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:33 AM

I think this is a good move, we should try to forget the differences and move forward with one goal, considering the development of the country

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:40 AM

If I am not Wrong, UNP did so to get SB released?

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:44 AM

No point trying to fool everybody by sending meaningless petitions thats just goes to a waste paper bin. I challenge UNPers to go ahead & appoint SF as the joint leader of UNP with RW, if UNPers are genuinely want SF released & it will also help UNP to come out of this never ending reforms & leadership issues that keep pushing UNP to the pavement.

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:45 AM

Hero or traitor who is regretting tigers were beaten ?

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:50 AM

The only crime SF commited was eradicate terrorism from SL

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:53 AM

Is he still in custody ? WHAT A SHAME !

    Tuesday, 25 May 2010 08:54 AM

According to the law all the suspects should be in detaining custody all the time till the trial is over. That is unless he is given bail. That’s why we have remand prisons. SF is luck. He is in an apartment.
