Political party representatives criticized IGP Mahinda Balasuriya in front of Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake today, for the police’s failure to remove all unlawful election related cut-outs, posters and banners.

However, the IGP who grew visibly angry to the accusations said that the police were facing difficulties in removing such cut-outs and posters due to pressure by candidates. He added that the police had so far removed 112 kilos of political flags, 28,390 posters, 11,092 banners and   another 1665 posters pasted on vehicles. (KB)

    Saturday, 20 March 2010 05:47 AM

    Saturday, 20 March 2010 04:53 AM

What's the purpose of shouting at the IGP in front of the election Commissioner, They are both birds of a feather - KONDA PANA NEHA.

    Saturday, 20 March 2010 04:51 AM

Mr. IGP, why don't you take an overseas vacation until the 9th of April 2010.

    Saturday, 20 March 2010 04:12 AM

this indicate that there is no law and order in Sri Lanka. If the IGP has to bow down to political pressure he should immediately resign.

    Saturday, 20 March 2010 03:49 AM

Sack him, he's not fit to be the IGP, what more evidence we want, he's accepting Police inefficiency to follow the Law, so why should the Public pay salaries for these 'Henchman'

    Friday, 19 March 2010 07:51 PM

Let us be realistic ... he needs to ensure that he retains his job, even after the election.

    Friday, 19 March 2010 07:41 PM

He is doing a good job ... Keep it up Mr. IGP ...

    Friday, 19 March 2010 06:49 PM

Politicians and their stooges put up posters and cutouts in their thousands and then proceed to blame the IGP for not pulling them down. Who are these irresponsible and cunning politicians trying to fool?

    Friday, 19 March 2010 06:00 PM

After all this is Sri Lanka - THE LAND OF NO RULES. So, people, just ignore what these jokers are doing.

    Friday, 19 March 2010 05:59 PM

It's the very people who put-up these banners, posters, etc., who are shouting at the IGP! We should not be shouting at 'small fish.'

    Friday, 19 March 2010 01:24 PM

Can the IGP then confirm if the cut outs etc.that were removed belonged to all parties without any fear or favour towards the current ruling party's members???

    Friday, 19 March 2010 03:27 PM

A mosquito bite on a buffalo, he don't care

    Friday, 19 March 2010 03:24 PM

    Friday, 19 March 2010 02:58 PM

    Friday, 19 March 2010 02:50 PM

Mr I.G.P., It is a shame on you, if you cannot maintain Law & Order. What are you being paid for? Do you have two legs to stand? Why don't you go home, if you cannot perform your duties? Tax payers are broke. What a shame?

    Friday, 19 March 2010 02:50 PM

so that is why people are picked up off streets in daylight 'cos of no pressure

    Friday, 19 March 2010 02:50 PM

Police is a puppet of the gornment

    Friday, 19 March 2010 02:49 PM

you right,if he cannot face these political dogs' threat and do his job,he should go home.

    Friday, 19 March 2010 02:23 PM

Why not these political leaders trying to correct themselves first? Ultimately they the one who use posters and cut-outs.

    Friday, 19 March 2010 02:17 PM

    Hi

There is no law of the land in SL matey.

The Law is Rajapakse. He decides what people wants and what they should do? Whom they should vote????

    Friday, 19 March 2010 02:10 PM

Its the same "Animal Farm" theory of George Orwell. All candidates are civilians, but some are more equal than others because they come from Royal families and their servant boys and girls. So, the Police generally is shivering in front of them. No need for IGP to get angry, let him admit that the Police have no powers against these candidates.

    Friday, 19 March 2010 01:49 PM

IGP seems to be good at counting. We don't need to bring in foreigners to count ballots anymore. By the way, Canadidates are civilians untill theyget elected and what pressure can a civilian pose on police? What does the Law of Land says on this kind of situation?

    Friday, 19 March 2010 01:48 PM

Out of all posters & banners, what is the ratio between Govt & opposition? Mr IGP being a serving officer you behaved like a common criminal at that meeting

    Friday, 19 March 2010 01:30 PM

Why cant those politicians who pasted those posters remove it ? No one asked them to paste those garbages.
Police can concentrate on thier jobb. I mean their real jobb.
Ordinary people cannot bear the cost.

    Friday, 19 March 2010 01:26 PM

Why should the Police give in to the pressure from candidates? Thjis is why thre should be a Police Commission appointed in accordance with the 17th Amendment to the Constitution should exist.
