President Mahinda Rajapaksa has dissolved Parliament and the gazette notification to this effect has been sent to the government printer, Presidential spokesman Lucien Rajakarunanayake told Daily Mirror Online.

General elections are expected to be held on April 8 and nominations for the polls are to be called between February 19-26, sources had earlier told Daily Mirror online.

Key political parties contesting the elections including the ruling UPFA and the main opposition UNP are in the process of finalizing the nominations of their parties for the polls. (KA)

The same Elections Commissioner is in power. The answer is that MR will get more than 2/3rd's majority.

..And we thought that the Election Commissioner was at last growing a spine......
Seems like even the little bit he had has dissolved now.

It is understandable that when everything else is lost and your candidate in prison, all that is left is to shout 'foul'. Long lbefore SF's candidature, some of his crimes were documented. Anyway, he is in Army custody because he has violated Army regulations. He has no escape because when that is finished he would be charged in a civil court for his other crimes. Some blinkered people will continue to shout 'foul' no matter what.

Not 2/3rd, sue 2 will be hanging out as usual, even the ONE will also drop like a dead Squirrel.

How can Mahinda dissolve parliament when he is not the legitimate (rightfully elected) President. It should be General Sarath Fonseka who should have dissolved parliament.

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 11:58 PM

'Two thirds majority,' is yet to be announced.

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 10:50 PM

Gearing-up for a clean sweep? X-General to face court-martial? May the Triple-Gem, truly, bless Sri Lanka!

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 09:52 PM

Thus, comes the end of the JVP.

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 09:34 PM

Your caption is erroneous - it should have read: "President dissolves Democracy."

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 09:20 PM

Do not waste your time casting your vote ... 'DEMOCRACY IS DEAD'!

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 08:52 PM

    We already know the result!

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 07:53 PM

There is no doubt that the UPFA will win the election, with a majority, as long as our Elections Commissioner is in power.

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 04:14 PM

Ahhhhh !!! It is too close ka

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 07:11 PM

Government ... in the last stages of its life cycle.

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 06:47 PM

During the last 4 1/2 years, how manny elections have we had?

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 06:44 PM

People who voted for SF would stand with him! Even if the UNP were to go it alone, under the elephant symbol, UNPers would vote for the SWAN, in support of a decorated war hero, who battled valiantly, to fight terrorism.

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 05:05 PM

Who care for the election mann. Why are you in a hurry. Don't dream that SF will be under your claws, we will remove him out very soon and make him to stand for the forth-coming election. Then you guy will see stars.

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 04:51 PM

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 04:47 PM

I want to remind the west, the concerned ones, those who provided the great appetite for democracy through out the world; we are presently constipated and need some relief. Your democracy has relegated the best in us and enthroned the scum. Sorry if I hurt the feelings of anyone. I strongly believe in freedom of expression.

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 04:46 PM

    OOohhhh this is banana republic

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 04:43 PM

Now that the parliament is dissolved, all the MPs are Normal citizens. Let's see whether their extravagances will be removed.....

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 04:26 PM

Long live SF and we hope you will be in parliament with a record no of votes as seen never before! May the Tripple Gem and the Devas bless you.

    Tuesday, 09 February 2010 04:25 PM

It was obvious that the government did not want General Fonseka's group to contest the General Elections and thats why they staged all this drama in arresting the General. The government will win the General Elections too adopting the same tactics as for the Presidential Elections and with the support of the same spineless Elections Commissioner. This is the death of Democracy as we know it.
