At least three people were killed and several others injured when panicked passengers of the Kandy bound train jumped off the train when the train’s engine caught fire at Waduruwa, Veyangoda a short while ago, official sources said.

They said the passengers who jumped off the train were hit by the Matara bound train which was travelling on the next track.

However, the railways authorities were able to bring the fire under control within less than thirty minutes without any casualties.

The govt seriously needs to start putting people's needs ahead of their own -----fix the transport system!! Make them safe!!! When are they going to reinforce rules on the highway? Are they waiting for a huge accidents just like the trains?! Now buses and trucks and ancient vehicles are all on the highway driving with no highway experience. No seatbelt laws are enforced. When are they going to open their eyes?!?!?!?
