According to the defence pact signed between Sri Lankan and the United States in 2006, Sri Lanka will be compelled to support the US or its allies if a war involving them erupts in this region, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said today.

Opening the debate on the US-sponsored resolution against the country at the UNHRC, JVP parliamentary group leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said though some government ministers had made anti-US diatribes, they remained silent when such agreements with far reaching consequences against the country were signed.

“If the US launches a war in this region against anyone, we cannot take decisions according to our conscience. There is no room for us to weigh the pros and cons of such a situation and take independent decisions. We have agreed to provide the services of our airport and harbours to the US or its allies,” he said. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)

agreed we have the right to terminate this agreement and the US have the right to terminate any trade agreements they have with us. So we are the loosers in the long run.

That is true. We must withdraw from this as well as other countries.

What are we getting in return ? What if US attacks Sri Lanka itself? Our Army has to support US army??

We are a small country. We don't live in a vacuum. To add to that we are in a strategically important location in the Indian Ocean. Eventually we will have to choose sides. Siding with the US is not surprising.

We have signed an international agreement and we cannot back out now without repercussions. If we agreed the US could use our facilities in case of a conflict, then we are bound by the terms of that agreement. In any case they have a well stocked base just south of S/L in the island of Diego Garcia The US Navy operates a large naval ship and submarine support base, military air base, communications and space tracking facilities, and an anchorage for pre-positioned military supplies for regional operations aboard Military Sealift Command ships. Therefore its very unlikely that they would use the limited facilities available in S/L
