Over 700 suspects have been detained under the emergency regulations with both the Terrorism Investigations Division (TID) and the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) continuing investigations after the emergency was extended this month, a TID source said.

The source added that although the number of arrests in the recent past had decreased, investigations were continuing.

“We have already arrested more than 700 suspects under the emergency laws up to date. Most of them were arrested during the final stages of the war,” the TID source told Daily Mirror online.

Parliament voted to extend the state of emergency across the island when it reconvened for a special session in early March.

The government said the laws were needed to contain LTTE suspects, but the opposition said they were aimed at stifling the opposition and the media.
