Despite a decision to call off the countrywide university strike today, the Federation of University Teachers Associations (FUTA) said that a proposal put forward by the government based on the unions’ demands was not sufficient and that FUTA would continue its struggle until the government addressed its concerns.

“This is not a permanent exit but a temporary suspension of a historic struggle. We will continue with greater determination and expect the government to fulfill what they had agreed to. We will be watching closely,” FUTA Spokesman Dr. Mahim Mendis said.

“The FUTA Executive Committee chose not to join the press conference because the majority of the union membership did not believe that the joint statement was sufficient enough to call off the trade union action. The reason we chose to call it off is because A/L paper marking has to begin, university courses should continue and teachers have foregone their salaries for months,” FUTA President Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri said. Are you also a part of this gang rallying to increase their salary or related to one? Their just putting up a cover of increasing funding but if the government just increased their salary they would have stopped the protest immediately.

For your information I never enjoyed free education. Or never want to even for my children. It's an unproductive system where everyone is forced to get private tuition. Your better off in a private school and a private university like the rest of us.

demand is good but the intentions are wrong.

What happened is a good lesson for those who were behind to bring this Govt to power. All salaries will have to be increased anyway in the budget.

Then, never give up your fight.

You sounds really selfish. Many people agree that this was the only time (during last several decades) any society struggle to force government to get educational benefits towards countries free education. I think as a person who benefit the free education system, everyone should appreciate the effort of FUTA. No one in the resent history of SL had ever try to win benefits for public other than their own salary.
Yes they try to increase their salary. Also they put huge effort to educate SL citizens about the amount of funding available for education. Now everyone (people and government) knows 6% deal of education. I think that is a heroic effort that everyone should respect.

The 6% for national education was just a red herring. The real issue was an increase for them which they got and they cry crocodile tears for free education.

Junior Citizen Friday, 12 October 2012 11:40 AM

They got what they wanted- this is all rubbish -from the biggining they took the public for a ride with a 6% and hoodwinked the students and opposition--now back with arrears and pay increase- Good brains.

Learned people shall be given their proper place. Not the politicians. Everybody should realize that. Most of their demands shall be given. Do not forget if education is not there then no future for any country. And should analyse why this problem got dragged.

Whole country now knows what your demand is?

    TheAthesit Friday, 12 October 2012 10:32 AM

Because of these idiots and their never stopping salary demands, the academic year has been postponed for more than 2 months. Undergraduates as well as Masters students are paying for this.

We do not pay hundreds of thousands of rupees to get our masters graduation dragged by. Also we have other personal plans such as migrating so on which are completely ruined because of these strikers.

    malkanthi Friday, 12 October 2012 10:29 AM

our poor kids are penalized while ministerial kids get higher studies overseas.
