The police department will from today strictly implement the law which only allows three passengers to travel on the rear seat of a three-wheeler.

Police spokesman Ajith Rohana said this would help minimise road accidents. He said between April 1 and May 7 there had been 27 accidents involving three-wheelers leaving 34 people killed.

SP Rohana said legal action would be taken against the three-wheeler owner and the driver if an accident were to take place and added that some 670,000 three-wheelers were registered to operate in the country.

Meanwhile, the three-wheeler meter-taxi association yesterday welcomed the move to implement the law limiting the number of passengers on a three-wheeler to three. (Indika Hewawitharana)

Are we short of rules and regulations or short of catching the culprits. This Country will never never come right.

    Asoka Tuesday, 08 May 2012 10:18 AM

overloading is also a reason for accidents.

    Bigfoot Tuesday, 08 May 2012 07:00 AM

That goes not only to the three wheel drives but to all Sri Lankans of all ages and social positions. In Sri Lanka there is not social manners or etiquette.

    TruePatriot Tuesday, 08 May 2012 11:31 AM

3 wheelers have no doors. If there are 4-5 passengers on the back seat, and the 3 wheeler goes at 50kmph and has to suddenly brake, people will go flying from the sides because they're not securely positioned.
    it's quite simple actually.
those who complain about 'cant afford', although we all have sympathy for those who cannot afford a bigger vehicle, the answer is not to put ppl in danger, but for the govt to improve the public transport system so they can make those journeys safely by bus or train.

Lingua bona Tuesday, 08 May 2012 11:38 AM

I reply via myself: Is there no end to the cynical and sarcastic comments on this country's problems? None of us has a magic wand, but we all might offer something positive and then beat the shit out of those who go against the grain of common sense and basic decency.

buffaloa citizen Tuesday, 08 May 2012 11:43 AM

Human beings are intelligent and need to be plan their life unlike cats and dogs. Number of children is according to the level of care one can provide and financial capability. If you are unable to provide adequate care to children, then it is your duty to restrict the number of children in your life, unless you want to live similar to an animal without civilised responsibilities.

    danu Tuesday, 08 May 2012 12:23 PM

The accidents to be minimized.stop the driving of heavy vehicles in the day time

    human Tuesday, 08 May 2012 12:32 PM

The meter taxi will do what ever to raise money for themselves, but the people who travel are the once have to pay, normally 4 people an travel in a rear seat of a three-wheeler, but this government thinks, us people have lot of money to spend so they made it 3. Wow what a law.... is this the future we want.

    Mahajanaya Wednesday, 09 May 2012 04:57 AM

Ban trishaws in Sri Lanka? Implement it buses as well most of families included with four people so this is stupid idea at least four people can go on it that’s fine. Please be practical.

    Firstlady Wednesday, 09 May 2012 05:20 AM

    What about Motorbikes with 3 -4 (adults/kids)?

    garawi Wednesday, 09 May 2012 05:40 AM

I have seen 5 persons in the back seat at times. This makes the three wheeler unstable and lopsided making it topple taking bends. That is one way of minimizing accidents.

    Mervyn Wednesday, 09 May 2012 02:29 PM

It is very good to limit the number of passengers (three only) that a three wheeler can transport. Additionally, at the first time the driver and the owner should be fined and should be annotated in the ownership documents. However, if caught second time then three wheeler should be confiscated, licence of the driver withdrawn in addition to fines levid. In western countries a normal sedan can carry only four passengers without the driver if caught carrying more the driver will be punished and the extra passengers are ordered to find another mode of transportation.

    Sisama Friday, 11 May 2012 12:49 PM

yes they have to implement the other rules as well like Lingua bona

    rosahi Tuesday, 08 May 2012 03:15 AM

Good move to save lives.. I see the driver having their child on the lap, sometimes. It is good that order is being established on the road.Time to change our Sri Lankan unruly life styles.

Black Mamba Tuesday, 08 May 2012 12:54 AM

Another hit on the poor family that couldn't afford a vehicle of their own. So a mother, father and their two kids sitting on their laps is out of the question? Welcome to the Miracle of Asia!!!

Just Another Citizen Tuesday, 08 May 2012 02:39 AM

Good move, what about 5 people on motorbikes? True that it is a hit to the family, but they need to value the lives of their loved ones. We need to stop comparing ourselves to other Asian countries & need to evolve.

    janaka Tuesday, 08 May 2012 02:42 AM

five including babies on motor cycles?

Lingua bona Tuesday, 08 May 2012 01:26 AM

Good move but I would like to see the police strictly implement other rules on the road, such as buses racing and speeding down Galle Road and excessive use of horns, say at Dehiwala Junction.

    Dinesh Tuesday, 08 May 2012 03:19 AM

Better implement it buses as well

    Dinesh Tuesday, 08 May 2012 03:20 AM

    Can they afford ?

    ram Tuesday, 08 May 2012 03:21 AM

While increasing prices of everything, why this rules,f want to minimize road accident, please enforce other road rules, as well as improve road conditions, What about 3 folds of over loaded passengers in public transport bus and trains, do the govt. think over loaded bus and trains never meet accidents. only to 3 wheels and cars/vans. Wh double game for govt . and public different law.

    Buff Tuesday, 08 May 2012 03:33 AM

When your poor family meets with an accident and all get seriously injured you can also blame the government ???? These laws must be implemented for the good of all and Hooray for the Government, people like you will find something to complain about the government.

Ex Army Tuesday, 08 May 2012 05:56 AM

    Kangaroo2 Tuesday, 08 May 2012 06:09 AM
