UNP MP Lakshman Seneviratne has also decided to vote with the government for constitutional reforms when the proposals are presented in Parliament next week.

Making his announcement at a media briefing in Colombo a short while ago, Seneviratne was joined by UNP Polonnarauwa District MP Earl Gunasekara who also said yesterday that he had decided to pledge his support with the government over the constitutional amendments. (Daily Mirror online)

I think it is advisable for RW to stay in India till everything is over.

    kumar Friday, 03 September 2010 06:09 AM

    jumbo jumping

    Yehiya Friday, 03 September 2010 06:14 AM

    Ranils leadership brought this situation.

    Wasantha Friday, 03 September 2010 06:19 AM

This same guy showed that he would sooner support MR by giving evidence against SF. Definitely he too has hidden agendas like Earl.

    Ranjan Friday, 03 September 2010 06:41 AM

Well even if Sajith comes, will these MP's like to stay in the opposition for 6 more years? Also there is every possibility they can jump back to UNP in the last few months of the final year and get a National List slot. That is the trend. So don't blame Ranil, Don't blame MR , just shake the system. Lucky and Earl are just 2 more opportunitistic Sri Lankan politians after all.

Also people like Ranjan, Akila Viraj are the MP's who are protecting Ranil these days but I'm not surprised if they also jump to the government in the near future.

    sltk2004 Friday, 03 September 2010 06:42 AM

So you mean Ranil's leadership is making it impossible to think rationally for these guys. Just because they don't like Ranil's leader ship, they can let anything happen to the country? Good logic...

Dk Devaka Friday, 03 September 2010 12:23 PM

Looks like there'll be no opposition in the end of next year. Then govt. will have 3/3 or 1/1 . Good signs for this country. MR can do this job.

    mnsmart Friday, 03 September 2010 06:48 AM

who wants to hang on a sinking ship.... more to come

    Bala Friday, 03 September 2010 12:28 PM

What about the country sinking to a lower level with these opportunists??

    Bala Friday, 03 September 2010 12:30 PM

No just feathering their nests - forget the country & the voters.

Dr Wickramatillake Friday, 03 September 2010 12:45 PM

Lakshman, You are a shame to STC and your great father...

    auto Friday, 03 September 2010 06:54 AM

If we are surprised ? of all these moves, Means we have taken
    them seriously, Do not..
Since they don't take us Seriously......

    Ramzeel Friday, 03 September 2010 07:02 AM

Please remember the UNP was reduced to 8 seats in the 1965 Parliament and also were not the main opposition party. TULF's Late Mr. Amirthalingam was the leader of the opposition. This is nothing new. Let the opportunists grab whatever Mahinda offers and go but one day they will have to face the masses. Thats the day they will find their waterloo.

SL Ara Friday, 03 September 2010 07:02 AM

These political bussinesmen cannot sustain in opposition. We expect more to jump over in coming days...!

    IND Friday, 03 September 2010 07:10 AM

Rats jumping from the sinking ship !!

    Athi Friday, 03 September 2010 07:11 AM

Ranil thinks that he has inherited UNP from his relatives. He will remain as the only UNP MP for ever and die as the opposition leader. There are no printable words to describe Ranil's selfishness.

    AMEER Saturday, 04 September 2010 07:22 AM

No, TNA will be the main opposition

    Sharma Saturday, 04 September 2010 07:35 AM

Who cares about the country? Make hay while sun shines.

    Channa M Friday, 03 September 2010 07:54 AM

It is a good trend. If parties cannot take collective decisions due to internal issues, then they will have to use their discretion towards what is best for the country.

    Geronimo Friday, 03 September 2010 08:23 AM

If such a big elephant as Lakshman can jump, who will be next? Probably Ranil, as he has gone to consult with his mentor, Sai Baba!!!!!

    Anver Friday, 03 September 2010 08:26 AM

Nothing surprising, as this is a nation of ungrateful people.

    H2 Friday, 03 September 2010 08:38 AM

Looks like we are heading for a one party system. No end to Chinese influence in SL it seems.

kks perera Friday, 03 September 2010 08:46 AM

Ramzeel you are wrong 8 seats was in 56, but they got 36% of the votes, Ranil reduced it to 29% he willtake only a few years to finish it off -old UNPer

    duminda Friday, 03 September 2010 09:34 AM

JVP will be the main opposition

    sanus Friday, 03 September 2010 10:18 AM

At this rate poor Ranil will have only Mangala to console and company him
