All army deserters will be offered to leave Army officially with clearance starting from February 4 to 12, the Army announced.

“Arrangements are made for all officers and soldiers who are absent without leave whilst on active service in the Sri Lanka Army to leave Army officially with clearance. These arrangements are made to coincide with the forthcoming Independence Day,” military spokesman Major General Ubaya Medawela said in a statement.

The absentees can report to their respective regimental headquarters and get the official clearance from the army at special counters opened for this purpose during the specified period, he said.

While claiming that this should not be considered as a General Amnesty but a special concession for the absentees, the spokesman said that the arrests of army deserters those who do not report will be continued.

There are very hard times ahead. Will this increase the pension bill, leading to inflation? We can't afford to be woolly-headed any more.
