The Sri Lankan government has rejected the characterization of the war in Sri Lanka as being a civil war saying it’s a characterization “conveniently” used by the western countries.

Responding to comments by Amnesty International to the US media, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the US Jaliya Wickramasuriya, said that it is outrageous to suggest that the government of Sri Lanka committed human rights abuses and war crimes as it defeated the LTTE.

“Sri Lanka's long fight against a terrorist army, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, was not a civil war. That's a convenient Western characterization. The LTTE ruthlessly took over parts of Sri Lanka and killed any person – many of them Tamil – who stood in their way. Secondly, it is outrageous to suggest that the government of Sri Lanka committed human rights abuses and war crimes as it defeated the LTTE in May 2009. In fact, the government rescued nearly 300,000 people who were held hostage as human shields by the LTTE. Furthermore, Sri Lankan forces are trained in human rights,” the Sri Lankan envoy said.

The Ambassador notes that Sri Lanka is working hard to provide Tamils and all others affected by the conflict with a new beginning, and so it is also outrageous to suggest that Tamils who return to Sri Lanka will be persecuted.

“Accusations come easy without facts, but facts make it difficult to sustain tired arguments. I should think that Amnesty International would be heartened by the fact that terrorist violence against innocent civilians has been halted in Sri Lanka for more than a year,” the envoy added. Wheather it is a civil war or not, is the question. We must study why this took place and come out with a solution, so that this will not happen again. I feel the cake should be shared squarely.

Very good reply Mr Ambassador to the NGO who survives on telling lies so that they receive money for their bogus work.

Who cares what the wording is. But the fact remaines that many innocent lives were lost and it has to be probed by a international tribunal not a local one .
