Private bus owners today said they will not be providing private bus transportation free of charge to A/L students sitting for their examinations although the Education Ministry had made a formal announcement to that effect.
The Private Bus Owners Association (PBOA) said yesterday that such a decision was not discussed with private bus owners and without making prior arrangements with the private bus operators.
Education Minister, Bandula Gunawardena at a press conference yesterday made a formal announcement that all students sitting for the A/L examination next month will receive free private bus transportation from August 8 – September 3. The Minister said these services will be available to the students provided that they show their A/L admission card.
“The ministry should not make such vague statements without discussing it with us beforehand. By doing this they will only distress and inconvenience the students and could potentially damage their education by doing this,” PBOA President, Gemunu Wijeyratne said.
He said last year a similar announcement was made to provide free transportation within the Western Province for students. He said it was an inconvenience to the students at the time.

Can understand school children getting 50% off but 100% is a bit too much ... anyway the private bus owners only care about money ,,, it doesnt matter to them who sits for what exam.... all this for not having a proper Public Transport System (Govt owned)

The minister promises a free bus ride on private buses. This is very illogical. If the minister is so concerned with the students he should organize state transport. Further no one should get free rides of any sort. The minsters get many free ride and they do not care as to who pays for it.

Better to have Government Bus service in every where..Private transport should stopped immediately. we don't want this reckless drivers and rowdy conductors any more. Our Hon.President will build new SRI LANKA.

Better if private bus owners can agree..its just few days for few students....but it is extremely unproffesional the manner minister had made the statement. Private bus service is a business and you cannot dicate terms like this without any discussions. This will amount to giving undue privilages to bus owners later.

This is utterly unnecessary. These ministers always want to give people what they don't need. They ask for many other things, but they never get.No plan,no vision,no nothing. But we vote .
