A feasibility study on establishing a 10 km railway land line from Maradana to Battaramulla via Dematagoda would be started today (26), Sri Lanka Railways said today.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Railway Department Superintendent Vijaya Samarasinghe said the plan of the proposed 10 km railway line would be finalised this week.

“The Ministry of Transport had proposed the new railway line from Maradana to Battaramulla to ease traffic congestion. After a steering committee comprising officials from the Urban Development Authority (UDA) and Transport Ministry met, final decisions and recommendations on the estimated cost of the railway line and other important issues will be finalised,” he said.

Buildings and houses, which would be found on the railway line would be removed, he said.

“Among the buildings which will be found in the railway line, will have to be removed only if we could negotiate with the owners on compensation. Otherwise, the railway line will have to be built over the buildings. Further, we are able to use electric trains too. But, it is up to the Transport Ministry to make a final decision with regard to this,” Mr. Samarasinghe said. (Piyumi Fonseka)

Given the current population in this area, it is best that mono rails above ground levels be looked at rather than usual railway line, this minimize evictions and accidents

    OMG Tuesday, 27 October 2015 07:48 PM

Make a monorail on top of the existing road and save all the trouble.

    Dhanapala Tuesday, 27 October 2015 11:30 AM

Excellent project to help the general public. Good if it is electric.

Excellent extend up to Kaduwela if possible like the METROS in Singapore , Malaysia and Dubai with reasonable fare within reach of the office workers

Nelum Fernando Monday, 26 October 2015 04:59 PM

I will believe this only after seeing trains running on these proposed tracks.

Jim Kuru Monday, 26 October 2015 04:51 PM

    Pls.go head Asap

    Bandu Monday, 26 October 2015 04:43 PM

It is a good suggestion to have car and bike parks at every railway station. Further all outstation trains should be express trains.

    Tallgate Monday, 26 October 2015 04:35 PM

excellent.... Also appreciate if standards of trains on other lines are improved and a few more trains added specially to the main line (towards Gampaha side)

    Leel Monday, 26 October 2015 04:00 PM

Do not stop at baththaramulla go up to kaduwell from one side and thalawathugoda and hokandara from other side. If possible include athurugiriya as well

    Manjula Monday, 26 October 2015 03:49 PM

You are right Bandu. I should be extended up to Malabe and Athurugiriya Interchange of OCH. Surely 50% of traffic will reduce.

We need electric MRTS networking Panadura, Kottawa, Katunayake, Kadawatha, Homagama with Colombo / Maradana with all towns in-between. It is cheaper to build the lines above ground settled on single pillars. The stations and trains can have solar panel roofs. Instead of MaRa airport, we should have invested on this type of useful development, now do we have the money?

Coconut Republic Monday, 26 October 2015 03:30 PM

Good initiatives are emerging. Keep it up!Also , look into the train service up to Opanayake. Revamp the old small line track and moernize it.

Good work. Sri Lanka is a small country where U can implement very good railway system to travel easy with in few minutes. Singapore railway system is a very good example. If we can enable to establish this it will b a wonderful job.

Lanka Putha Monday, 26 October 2015 12:02 AM

This will be one of the best project. Best wises and and all the best to this project

    Sapu Monday, 26 October 2015 02:40 PM

But if anyone tries to privatize SLR the Patriots will shout

    sabe Monday, 26 October 2015 01:51 PM

Can we also have rural railway stations with car, bike parks? More frequent rails with comfortable compartments where we have parallel tracks? Overpasses and underpasses at railway crossings? Bus services to all parts of Colombo from major Colombo railway stations? Shared three wheeler services with designated parking spots for designated areas of Colombo?

Andrew pitugala Monday, 26 October 2015 12:59 PM

Anton it is true but all the more reason that we must develop.

    Bandu Monday, 26 October 2015 12:24 PM

It is a good move. If this could be extended up to Kaduwela express way exit it will help the people who are taking the bus service to travel to Colombo easily. If you have any idea of extending the Southern Highway to Colombo from Kottawa, then this is not required.

    lkboy Monday, 26 October 2015 12:23 PM

Do with minimum inconvenience to the people. Overhead electric trains are good.

    Siripala Monday, 26 October 2015 11:20 AM

Building over houses costs more money, its better to pay them compensation and give them new lands

    Goliwog Monday, 26 October 2015 10:40 AM

This project need to be handled by a new company. The Sri Lanka Railway is not suitable for such an project. The fares need to raised and the service provided of high quality. The present SLR fares are loo low and with it the poor service.

    sene Monday, 26 October 2015 10:40 AM

The BOI chairman said they are searching for Japanese investors for a MRT

    K.senarathne Monday, 26 October 2015 10:27 AM

We need a modern and comfortable public transport system with the proposed Megapolis population and businesses will skyrocket.

    Mali Monday, 26 October 2015 10:26 AM

SLR has woken up now while studies have been going on for many years. Let metro rail line be given to a new operator, not the worst managed organization in the country.

    Narayan Monday, 26 October 2015 09:26 AM

This is an excellent project. The government servants who go thorough a nightmare traveling from Maradana and Dematagoda to Battaramulla will bless the people who initiated the project. This will definitely take away a lot of traffic. Please keep Mr. Gemunu away, he and his goons will try to spoil the project.

    ANTON Monday, 26 October 2015 09:07 AM

..... BUT WE STILL HAVE SRT ........ SILPARAN RAIL TRACKS.

    Kamal Monday, 26 October 2015 08:05 AM

In order to ease traffic we should look at MRT or BRT the megapolis thats being planned is based on Singapore which have a BRT,MRT and subway at same time

    Sapu Monday, 26 October 2015 08:03 AM

It would be great if its electric as the statement in the last paragraph says
