The National Executive Council (NEC) had no authority to decide or call for the arrest of former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa or any person, the National Freedom Front (NFF) said today.

The party that backed the ousted President Mahinda Rajapaksa also questioned in what capacity the NEC took the decision.

“Only the Police can decide whether to arrest a person or not. One could also be arrested following a Court Order. It appears the Executive Council has become a ‘Hunting Council’,” NFF Spokesman Mohamed Muzammil told a news conference today.

It was earlier reported that the NEC had decided, when it met on Wednesday, to arrest former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, in connection with the floating armoury of Avant Guarde. (Lahiru Pothmulla and Sanath Desmond)
