Difficulties in finding an appropriate place had delayed the proposed Nuwara Eliya Air Port project, President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said.

“We are still on the look out for a proper place to start the project,” President said at a ceremony held in Nuwara Eliya. The ceremony was held to commence the second phase of Nuwara Eliya Gregory Lake garden.

Speaking about the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) the President said it would be advantageous for the future generation.

“We are working for the future of the country. It may be true that we are not receiving benefits of MRIA and Hambantota Port today. But we will benefit from them in near future,” he said.

but people in Colombo has to go to Negombo to fly, its distance, we dont have an Airport in the Capital, Mathara, Hambanthota, Kandy or NE still fly less than compare to people in the capital so MR need to consider developing Rathmalana to international standards that will help everyone, even the delegations coming to SL staying at Hilton etc, from Rathmalana its just few minutes drive

Making a place for an airport at Nèlliya is an another project. Perhaps we could buldoze few mountainous, blast a huge rock outcrops and form a very wide flat land at a cost. My only worry is that unlike in "Mattala", the landing and take off would be very risky in a " wet & misty environment" . Under the circumstances, the "future Generations" would decide to take "land rout" to mitigate the "air risk".

The country is bigger than just the Western Province.
Do you think people in Manchester come down to London to fly? or those in Bengaluru need to go to New Delhi? Sri Lanka needs to decentralise itself from Colombo and the Western Province. The final locations will be chosen due to political reasons (like Hambantota instead of somewhere more sensible like Matara). Somewhere in the outskirts of Nuwara Eliya may not be a bad idea. An airport to service the Central and North-East regions of Sri Lanka would be welcome

How on earth can we invest on non-productive projects in the mistaken belief that in the future people will benefit? Mattala and Hambantota projects are dead ducks. There is no logical explanation to spend billions of borrowed money for mega non-productive ego seeking projects. Can anyone with little bit of sense justify another mega project to build an airport in Nwuraeliya? Let me give a brief on air-ports/strips in this banana republic. Ratmanala -- Koggala-- Weeravila--- Mattala-- Ampara-- Batticoloa--- Trincomalee-- Palali--- Iranamadu--- Hingurakkgoda-- Vaunia--- Anuradhapura--- Sigiriya-- Katunayaka-- for fixed wing aircrafts. I think there are three locations for amphibian air crafts. For a country of 65,000 sq km of land we have 17 airports which makes an airport for every 3800 sq. km. We must be the only country which have such a record? What do we call ourselves? IDIOTS--- JOKERS--POL MODAYAS- PISSU HATAN- EGISTIC DOKEYS.

What humbug...mega developments is based on neccessities and business plan as this is enormous public money and not to whims and fancies of a meglomaniac. Hambantota Harbor, Mihin and MRIA are not even breakeven nor 10% loss, but truthfully a 100% loss to the public being mutilmillion projects. Simple example of a leaders "pada show".
