Navy petty officer blows himself up

A retired navy petty officer blew himself up with explosives stuffed into his belt.

Police media spokesman Ajith Rohana said the incident was reported on Makubura area in Homagama this morning at around 5.30am.

It is believed that he used a stock of fire crackers and stuffed them in his belt. He was found dead inside his room by two of his relatives living with him.

Police said that the 59 year old victim was a mentally sick person following the death of his wife in year 2005. His daughter who was a medical student at that time had then entered the order of monks. (Supun Dias and Muditha Dayananda)
