Navy Chief promoted to Admiral

Navy Commander Thisara Samarasinghe has been promoted to the rank of Admiral with effect from today by President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Commander-in-Chief, Navy Spokesman Captain Athula Senarath said.

Meanwhile, informed sources said that Admiral Samarasinghe is to retire on January 15, this year as his term has not been extended by the President. Rear Admiral D.W.A.S. Dissanayake, who is the second in Command of the Sri Lanka Navy is tipped to be the next Commander of the Navy.

    Most of our past military commanders have been promoted to the highest rank of general, admiral and air marshal when they retire, as a gesture of appreciation. It's just traditional.
