Sri Lankan High Commissioner in London, Dr Chris Nonis said that his resignation letter was accepted by the External Affairs Ministry yesterday (03).

He said that he was unlawfully assaulted by the Monitoring MP for the Ministry of External Affairs, in New York on September 24 and on the same day he met President Mahinda Rajapaksa and discussed the matter. He also said that he submitted his resignation letter on the same day and returned to London that evening.

“My resignation was accepted by the External Affairs Ministry yesterday (03),” Dr. Nonis today said.

In his resignation letter he stated that “…my unswerving loyalty to his Excellency the President and his family will always remain. I feel I have performed to the best of my ability and I am pleased that I had the opportunity to serve the country and the people of Sri Lanka.”

President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Friday ordered investigations into the alleged assault on Dr. Chris Nonis and also External Affairs Ministry Secretary Kshenuka Senawiratne’s complaint against Dr. Nonis, the Government Information Department said yesterday.

Reports said MP Sajin Vaas Gunawardane allegedly assaulted Dr. Nonis at the New York residence of Dilan Ariyawansa, who is a director of SriLankan Airlines.

It is also learnt that until the President’s directive came, the External Affairs Ministry had not initiated any inquiry into the incident.

The sadest part is that Dr.Nonis' loyalty is with HE and “family” he should be loyal to the president and the country. This is not a hereditary monarchy for him to be loyal to the ruler's family.

    Namal Sunday, 05 October 2014 09:03 AM

USA Courts can take action against Vass. But, there must be complaint to USA police. Had Ranil wickremasinghe taken action last year when his vehicle was pelted with stones in Balapitiya by Vass he would have learnt a lesson. Why RW gave pardon to him. Always when you do politics you must stand by basic norms of right ans correct. Vass's attack on opposition leader should have been complained to International Parliament Committee.

Ruwan Welikela Sunday, 05 October 2014 03:57 PM

This was all staged drama. Nonis is a somnambulist. Nonis dreamed of all of this after taking too much liquor. His resignation letter and his hospital visit in NYC was all done in his sleep.

It's a shame that that the government accepted the resignation letter of the best diplomat we had after may be the late Mr. Lakshman Kadiragamar

Calistus Jayatilleke Sunday, 05 October 2014 09:15 AM

A good lesson for all the intellectuals and the educated persons who still want to serve this government which is controlled and run by the worst thugs, hooligans and sycopants who are held in high esteem by the first family. The only exception is professori Peiris who has nicely adjusted himself to be one of those undesirable characters in order to please his boss. No wonder some countries consider us as a banana republic.
