President Mahinda Rajapaksa instructed the Education Minister to work out a system to subject students selected for sports activities to medical fitness tests first, the Government Information Department said.

The decision has been taken after an 18-year-old school girl died while taking part in the 5000 metre race at a School in Aranayake yesterday.

This may be the third such incident. Miracle of Asia. Why are the ministers in office, if President has to give instruction on such matters?

Such things should have been done as part of the normal routine in any educational institution without waiting for the President's orders. In any case, except the politicians and their family members, most people in the country are under-fed due to high living costs and are not fit to run marathons - they are only good to "run for their lives"
