President Mahinda Rajapaksa, addressing the UPFA May Day rally in Colombo today, invited the opposition to supporting the government to develop the country and urged them not to oppose everything for the sake of opposing.

“You must think about your country and others more than about yourself.I invite you to join hands and come together. We can overcome any external force with unity. If the country’s reputation, goodwill and the good name is harmed and its economy is mismanaged, we will never be able to achieve our developmental goals. We must forget all differences and get together now. The opposition must not oppose every thing that the government does for the sake of opposing. We must all come together to fulfill the aspirations of the people,” the President said.

It is possible if all the defeated candidates are given portfolios!

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 11:54 AM

    What??

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 02:21 PM

Can opposition forget what happened in the past ....????

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 05:19 PM

this has nothing to do with economy. SF is not economy, neither is the incompetent JVP that he is leading.

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 09:56 PM

release general fonseka, be fair to the oppostion, keep the promises you made, win the people's heart

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 10:30 PM

No problem. All MR has to do is to offer a few more ministerial appointments.

    Monday, 03 May 2010 03:57 AM

    Jackpot!

    Monday, 03 May 2010 05:53 AM

I agree. But im just wondering what exactly can we learn from our opposition... hmmm

    Saturday, 01 May 2010 06:15 PM

The opposition is indispensable. A good statesman, like any other sensible human being, always learns more from his opposition than from his fervent supporters.

    Saturday, 01 May 2010 09:32 PM

Mahinda really has lost it this time. Doesn't he understand what 'opposition' means? If they weren't opposing, what else would they do?

    Monday, 03 May 2010 06:36 AM

Wake up crhistine, you have been sleeping a long time !!!!!

    Monday, 03 May 2010 06:38 AM

That doesn't mean that only UNP knows. Just because he wants the OPPOSITION to keep away from OPPOSING everything done by Gosl. Labby, don't be so narrow minded.

    Monday, 03 May 2010 06:39 AM

    You are absolutely correct.

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 12:59 AM

Opposition did it once in a manner no other opposition in the world has done it. They even supported a useless, senseless budget for the sake of supporting. Weeks later 17 members of the UNP were grabbed by the Government. So what trust can the opposition afford to have on the present day rulers?

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 01:20 AM

    Mr President,
Get the best to fill the Key appointments in all development oriented areas, even from the private sector. This will show your concern and commitment. The country cannot develop without the support of the investments coming from private sector, only they can provide productive employment. Development needs to be measured, monitored, there are tools for this performance evaluation. Let us put the basics in order. Yapa

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 02:12 AM

Don't oppose corruption...you'll be immediately arrested or just disappeared for ever !.

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 02:12 AM

WISH FULL THINKING, AS ONE`S IN POWER ARE INCOMPETENT.

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 02:14 AM

SUPPORT OR KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT.

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 02:33 AM

Good advice from the President. Unfortunately, wasted on the opportunists in the opposition. If they couldn't join in when the country was burning there is very little hope for them to do so now.
    A well wisher

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 02:42 AM

People should not oppose anything and everything laid by the Govt. just because they are in the opposition. Of course, the Govt. also should not bring forward unpalatable decisions and expect no opposition. Now that the country is free from LTTE, it is time that all Sri-lankans irrespective of caste, religion and language should unite and bring back the country to a state that will be envied by all other countries. It is a land of paradise with a minimal population compared to many other countries.

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 02:54 AM

Why not release SF to start with ?

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 02:56 AM

President is absolutely correct. All opposition parties should work together with the government to rebuild the nation.they Should not oppose every agenda of the government for the sake of opposing.Similarly the government also should listen to the meaningful and constructive suggestions by the opposition.Tamil leaders should put their pity gains behind and work for rebuilding the nation. No longer should they be allowed to fool the Tamil people for gaining a separate state This is and it won't be possible hypothesis.Switch to English language in education, research and administration. Then you see the development within five years.

    Raga

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 03:48 AM

Remember how Karu and the rest ended up in government after formal talks with the opposition for national cooperation

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 04:27 AM

High time all should get togeather under one banner to develop our nation

    Monday, 03 May 2010 07:25 AM

He just wants a few to cross over so he can change the rules

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 05:11 AM

Inviting the opposition to support the development of the country clearly means he does not know how to do it by himself. The UPFA was in office for so long and now they want the UNP to help them with the development work. In that case why does he not go in for a national government?

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 05:50 AM

The element of Democracy is the Ruling and Opposition party, if the opposition party joined with ruling party, then what will happen to the democracy.

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 05:51 AM

The problem is that the SL opposition members think that they need to oppose everything by default since they are in the opposition... Even the good! since any good progress made will hamper their wishes of coming to power...

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 05:57 AM

Show us the development you are talking about. The war has been over for a year now.Has anything improved?

    Sunday, 02 May 2010 07:02 AM

May be calling for more mininsters
