Former president Chandrika Kumaratunge said today the Mahinda Rajapaksa government had initiated development projects illegally without finding funds needed for them and that the present government has had to pay back the loans obtained by them at exorbitant interest rates.

“No project can be initiated without crediting funds in the Treasury or finalising documents needed to fund such projects. It is illegal to do so. But the previous government launched such development projects including a drinking water supply scheme at an estimated cost of Rs.560 billion. They were forced to obtain loans at exorbitant interest rates to fund this project when contractors asked for money. Governments usually do not obtain loans at an interest rate of more than 2 percent but the previous government had obtained loans at interest rates of 9 per cent from China and European countries,” Ms. Kumaratunge said.

She said the government was renegotiating development projects initiated by the previous government without following the due tender procedure.(Ajith Siriwardana)

the lending banks have professional advisers, accountants, financial officers who look into development projects before they approve loans, and they mostly lend on proportions with the progress of the project. Previous government done a great job in development to get finance continuously

The lending banks wont approve projects that not give economic growth to a country, as there will be a risk in getting loan repayment from the borrower, if someone saying the project done in South including the airport is a waist, well ask yourself how did previous government got finance approved.from these professional lenders.

What ever said and done people should not forget what MR. and Mr.Gota did for our country.All these commentators living in or out of the country are free to walk any where they like in Srilanka with out any fear today. .Mme.Big mouth Chandrika, what did she do ?Through out she was a hindrance to the development of our country.Even during the time of Mr. Ranil. I think she is trying to clear the route for her children to get in to politics.People should not forget her part during the seventies and the eighties. There are a couple of books written about her by Mr.Victor Ivan,please read them, and that will explain what kind of a character she was.
