A Sri Lankan housemaid has been arrested on suspicion of strangling her newborn baby just moments after giving birth.

Sources told the GDN she stuffed a piece of cloth inside the infant's mouth after strangling it to make sure it was dead.

The 39-year-old is alleged to have killed the child last Thursday before hiding its body in a storeroom at her Bahraini employer's home, in Budaiya.

She apparently confessed to her boss the same day after he confronted her because she was acting unusual.

Sources said she told police the child's father was an Asian with whom she had an affair. Sri Lanka honorary consul general P B Higgoda confirmed a complaint had been filed with the police.

It is understood the woman had been admitted to Salmaniya Medical Complex following bleeding, but was discharged into police custody yesterday.

Its not fair to stop women going to the middle east. Most take off to the middle east because the men are drunks who mis manage money or have left families and gone. The women are desperate!. When they go there they get involved in all kinds of mis-deeds as they are not exposed to the wickeds of the world. Dont judge them.

Men from those rural areas generally drink and laze around while the wives go abroad and slave away and suffer abuse etc. Their culture is not how we know it.

i;m here in Bahrain last 12 years,this kind of incidents happening ,not only sri lankan mostly philippinas and other african natives they are doing similar.but killing of own infant to be punished strongly and our government and foreign affairs ministry have to take serious steps abt these matter.first of all we need here a good consul general without racism .

Our womens may be thinking that this is the easiest way of finding money working as a maid in a middle east country. First their lazy husbands to be blamed sending them away and ruin their lives. Secondly most of these womens do not like to work in their own country (if they are in so difficult situation) still like to go to middle east for nothing . Some times they have to come back without paid by the employer. Mainly Government should take some action to stop it

Guys, this is one of the story out of thousand stories happening in middle east. I was in the middle east region around 5+ years and its terrible to say what our people doing. Most of time its illegal relationships even though they are married in their home countries. We should stop let women go out as domestic workers even though that is the main revenue generate for SL but they are spoiling there family life for the sake of money.

Sending housemaids to the middle eastern countries is a serious social issue in Sri Lanka. So the care taker (Government) should take this issue in to consideration and find a amicable solution to this.

The Government import labor from out of the country and SL people got o other countries to find good job since they dont have places to work.. And when something goes wrong they point the finger at the country... Maybe we should stop getting labor from outside of the country and use SL people instead
