The eight suspects identified for assaulting the Mattakuliya police have been remanded in custody till July 14 by Colombo’s Additional Magistrate M.M.M. Mohamed.
The 8 suspects are accused of stealing three weapons from the police. Another identification parade to identify 19 other suspects is to be held tomorrow.
A tense situation arose in Mattakuliya on Saturday evening between an angry mob and the Mattakuliya police after a suspected drug addict who was arrested by the police injured his arm while in police custody. The tense situation prevailed in the area on Sunday after 20 suspects were taken into custody over a clash with the police, as residents claimed that the police had resorted to revenge.

How about arresting the suspect who hit the DIG in front of the UN in the Weerawansa ganging incident? It is on video and the act was committed in the presence of Weerawansa.

Attacks on Police by the public or by politicians cannot be condoned. Unless the Governments acts in a just and fair manner to bring the culprits to book irrespective of their colour or status, this could be the tip of the iceberg.
