Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena said it was he who had instructed the Polonnaruwa Police to arrest and produce his brother Priyantha Sirisena alias Raju in courts on charges of having damaged the Polonnaruwa Wildlife Department office and assaulting an employee.

“I do not condone thuggery and during my 25 years as an MP, a minister, leader of the House and SLFP General Secretary, I have never abused my power or engaged in any unlawful act. Therefore, I cannot accept any such act even if it was committed by my brother,” the minister said.

He told the media at the Information and Media Ministry office that as soon as he received the information about the alleged assault he summoned the Polonnaruwa Police and Wildlife office employees and inquired what had happened.

“I do not know the details. But I told the police that if they want to serve in Polonnaruwa they must arrest and produce the suspect before releasing him on bail,” the minister said.
He said he would never let anyone hide behind his ministerial power and break the law as he has been elected by the people in Polonnaruwa and his one and only priority was to serve them. I do not condone thuggery and during my 25 years as an MP, a minister, leader of the House and SLFP General Secretary, I have never abused my power or engaged in any unlawful act. (SAJ)

If what he says is true, really he deserves Prime Minister post. But, I doubt his integrity basing on his past statements.

    Vimal Saturday, 20 October 2012 09:29 AM

Well just because Mr Maithripala said it doesn't mean the other ministers will do the same thing, this it self shows the culture of politicians in SL, even the police fellows are scared to arrest someone if his related to a minister let alone a ministers son!

Arrest warrants are issued by the courts .... not by ministers. This proves ministers can influence the Police. What more

After the arrest the person(Police official) will be interdicted or will have to face an inquiry? Minister's brother will go to USA for a holiday.

If its not another drama, really appreciate his political behaviour. we need such politicians not thugs in parliament.

    Harfim Saturday, 20 October 2012 03:36 AM

The Police should have arrested the accused regardless of his relationship to anyone and without any politician's permission. That was their duty!

    Sadun Saturday, 20 October 2012 03:38 AM

A very good example if this is true, hope the rest of the Ministers and MPs follow the same path, we need leaders like this to rule our country, then I am sure Sri Lanka would be a better place and can set an example to the world!

    Thomas Saturday, 20 October 2012 03:53 AM

Another stunt to match Mervyn Silva. There is no alternative for the minister, because the damage was done to public property by his brother and the Police acted without obtaining permission from the minister.

Damien Perera Saturday, 20 October 2012 03:45 AM

Earlier, on the 17th, according to Police Spokesman SSP Prishantha Jayakody, the Minister's brother surrendered to the Police and was NOT arrested. Now the Minister says something different.

Considering that the reported incident occurred on the 5th and the suspect surrendered almost 2 weeks later, it is quite possible the Minister is right.

When favouritism and nepotism is at its worst in the history of Sri Lanka, Minister Sirisena is a RARE exception. How nice would it be if the other Ministers also follow him, vain hope though it is.

Game Kolla Saturday, 20 October 2012 03:54 AM

What authority minister has to issue an order to police to arrest a person. It is a duty and responsibility of the police to take legal action of any citizen in this country irrespective his/her position or status.

a good minister , ordered the arrest of his brother Wali Raja.or wali Raju. Thank you.

Al Rasa Saturday, 20 October 2012 05:00 AM

What is this attitude of people. Whenever an offspring or sibling of a minister is charged with any offence, some people directly accuses of the minister and make judgment by them-self. It is the law of the country that the course of action against an accused person the process is similar like apprehension, locked up in the police, producing to the courts, remanding and fixing trials.

    StringHopper Saturday, 20 October 2012 04:57 AM
