The Meteorology Department has warned against lighting strikes and strong winds and had asked the public to take precautionary measures.
The Department said that there would be showers or thundershowers at several places over most parts of the island during the afternoon and night. However, it said the low pressure area was moving away from the island.
“There may be temporary localised strong winds during thundershowers and the public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by lightning,” the Dpeartment said in a media communiqué.
“The low pressure area to the west of Sri Lanka is moving further away from Sri-Lanka. However, fairly strong (60 Kmph) winds can be expected over the island and suburb sea areas,” it said.
“Winds will be Southwesterly to Southeasterly reaching speeds upto 30-40 Kmph. Winds can be strengthening up to 60kmph.In addition there may be temporary localised strong winds (up to 70-80Kmph) during thundershowers.
“Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places over most parts of the island during the afternoon and night. Some showers can be expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa Southern and Eastern Provinces in the morning too.
“Showers or thundershowers will occur at times at sea off the coast extending from Jaffna to Batticaloa via Galle and Pottuvil .
“Generally, the sea areas around the island will be rough at times and the sea areas may be temporarily rough during thundershowers’ the Met Department said. (Chaturanga Pradeep)
