External Affairs Minister G.L Peiris yesterday said he could not condone statements made by a government Minister who claimed that he would clamp down on journalists and human rights activists who had travelled to Geneva.

“It is wrong and there is no defense of it. I cannot condone a statement from anybody when they state they are going to resort to violence. It is clearly wrong; no right thinking person is going to defend it or justify it,” he said.

However he said it was wrong for the international community to interpret one statement of violence as the official position of the government of Sri Lanka.

On the issues of Human Rights Activists who had been threatened while in Geneva Minister Pieris said that members of the delegation reacted emotively due to the unfair accusations made by the activists.

On Friday Public Relations Minister Mervyn Silva said he would break the limbs of some journalists, who had gone abroad and made various statements against the country, if they dared to set foot in the country. (By Dianne Silva)

    Dhammika Monday, 26 March 2012 02:10 PM

But, it is a well known fact that Mervyn is used as the unofficial mouth piece of the top. It has been so throughout the years

    Suje Monday, 26 March 2012 01:05 PM

Hey Mr GLP, forget about those Jokers, pull up your socks and try to implement the LLRC recommendations.

Upul Gunawardena Monday, 26 March 2012 12:29 PM

Why do you feel sorry about the President? Why can’t he get rid of this foul mouth? This shows that president has some unknown dealings with Mervyn that he doesn’t want the general public to know.

    Leslie Monday, 26 March 2012 06:37 AM

The vituperative language of the minister is unpardonable. It not only brings shame to the cabinet and to the government but to the whole country. The portfolio he holds is Public Relations. With his abusive talk what type of public relations he would be fostering is beyond imagination.

    Amila. G Monday, 26 March 2012 06:21 AM

Good, Good. UN has changed the tone. GL Don`t play words we need action .

    DAYAN Monday, 26 March 2012 06:03 AM

Hi GLP,....................Just think about your life and forget about Mervyn for a minute..................You must have made more contributions as an academic than a third grade politician

SHAUL NIZAR Monday, 26 March 2012 06:17 AM

I am sorry for our President. He is in a similar predicament of a big daddy trying to control a bully in the family.

    mara Monday, 26 March 2012 06:11 AM

don't worry GP will become tired of this MR mess

    Labby Monday, 26 March 2012 05:51 AM

The very people who a few days back held up placards and banners asking the United States to allow Sri Lanka to live in 'peace & harmony' are now threatening to break the limbs of its own citizens. Is it sufficient for the government to simply condemn that statement and then turn a blind eye to the unpardonable activities of one of it's own Ministers ?

    Tharika Monday, 26 March 2012 02:36 AM

And they say we live in a democratic country...hahahhaa

Mr Retort Monday, 26 March 2012 01:50 AM

Has he ever made any statement to be appreciated or admired. But all your bandwagan from top to bottom wants him.

    C.K. Lankaputhra Monday, 26 March 2012 01:49 AM

But the top man is silent on all this nonsense. Why?

    saj Monday, 26 March 2012 01:21 AM

So according to GL, Silva is not a right thinking person. will right thinking government will have such a minister? therefore our government has lost all credibility in international eyes. Before you win international community you have to have the trust of your own people....which is sadly missing with idiots like these.

    Chandana Sunday, 25 March 2012 05:00 PM

Not merely "Condemned"- he should be stripped of his posts and prosecuted!

    Hoodwinked Monday, 26 March 2012 12:36 AM

He is talking to UN Gallery. When a thing like this happens, remember this is not the first time, some cabinet Ministers have condemned such act, put no action taken against . There have been instances where the culprit is promoted or bestowed with something more.

    lankashantha Monday, 26 March 2012 12:24 AM

These journalist are just another guide for our country to be in the Democratic path. Respect them other wise India will say "see you have internal problems. That's why we took the other side."

UK- BANDA Sunday, 25 March 2012 11:52 PM

Brainless idiot....Would damage our position further...Its high time President to get this ignorant minister under floor mat before he make more damage to sri lanka

    ila Sunday, 25 March 2012 10:58 PM

Mervin is the honest person since he spoke his mind, and he did not try to hide what is in his mind. He can be a good sample to see what kind of government is out there in Sri Lanka.

    Mi Sunday, 25 March 2012 10:13 PM

Mr GLP make sure you have a extra securities from now on.

    Tintin Sunday, 25 March 2012 09:24 PM

Step 1. Brazen statement made or stupid circus by Mervyn
Step 2. Condemned, by some Govt official or the other.
Step 3. Huge racket made for a few days by Public and media.
Step 4. Case investigated ( Or at least given the impression )
Step 5. Price of fuel ( or some other commodity ) rises,
Step 6. Someone else says or does something worse or better
    Step 7. Forgotten conveniently...
Step 8. Mervyn goes scot free,
Step 9. After a break, life resumes to step 1.

    raymond Sunday, 25 March 2012 08:39 PM

Professor Peiris, it is manifestly clear that no one can touch Mervyn. He can say what he wants and do what he wants!

    DeSilva Sunday, 25 March 2012 07:50 PM

UN resolution had civilised GL. I hope this changes will happend to all Sri Lankans

    Royalist Sunday, 25 March 2012 07:09 PM

    kushan11 Sunday, 25 March 2012 05:53 PM

    kiribath Sunday, 25 March 2012 05:20 PM
