Deputy Minister of Media Mervyn Silva has resigned from his post today just as Keheliya Rambukwella took oaths as the new Media Minister before President Mahinda Rajapakse.

The President's office confirmed that Silva had handed over his resignation this morning and had sought a new ministry.

Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella told Daily Mirror online that Silva had handed over his resignation this morning and was immediately given another Deputy Minister post by President Rajapakse.

Silva has been appointed as the new Deputy Minister of Highways.

Daily Mirror online learns that Silva's sudden resignation was a result of a dispute between him and Minister Rambukwella.

Silva who assumed duties at the Media Ministry in Colombo last week had made a pledge to resign from his new post if there were any allegations against him and if such allegations were proven to be true.

After taking oaths he had also received criticism from international media rights groups such as Reporters Without Borders who raised concerns as to why the President had appointed an anti media man to such a position.

He had however pledged to look after journalists saying he would treat them as his own. (Daily Mirror online)

PERMIT ME TO DEFER FROM MOST OF YOU HERE.DR MERVIN IS NOT BAD AS MANY THINK.HE IS A MUCH BETTER THAN MANY OF WHO YOU THINK GOOD.THE DIFERENCE BETWEEN HIM AND THE FAMOUS 'GOOD' ONES IS, THEY DO BAD THINGS SECRETLY AND MERVIN DO OPENLY.

Mervyn would have been the best media minister, this is the work of illiterate security personal who are an embrassment to the President and Media Minister - You cannot blame Mervyn and HE for every mistake made by goons, they will be dealt with by the President immediately, that is for sure.

The man wasn't suitable for the media post anyway... but now he has selected a better one.. Highway.. that's where all the money is... What, are these posts like some sort of cookies that are being handed out to children???

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 09:11 AM

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 10:19 AM

Media or highways, he is there to disrupt the Opposition members when they make an important point that may embarrass the govt. Once the former speaker Lokubandara made a special reference to him expunging the marks he made!

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 07:05 PM

Do we have a highway, to justify a minister and deputy being appointed?

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 07:03 AM

The best news we read after the general election. He was the Presidents worst selection. it seems that Mr Silva is becoming sane now.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:34 AM

    Jokers & Clowns.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:47 AM

These are all dramas without any substances or importance. MR will offer him another post. Utter waste of time and money. Between Keheliya and Mervyn, there is not much difference, To be honest there isnt a single guy from the govt suitable for Media ministry (or any other ministry post for that matter).

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:48 AM

CAN HE TAKE OVER ANOTHER 'JOB' IF HE CANNOT SURVIVE MORE THAN A WEEK IN THE MEDIA MINISTRY ?

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:56 AM

The appointments show the caliber of the Ministers of the Government. We are running out of intellectuals, educated as a result of every tom, dick and harry elected to the parliament.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:34 AM

He would have been forced to because of the assault on the DM's journalist.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 07:03 AM

IS THIS A GAME OF MUSICAL CHAIRS - OR PUSS PUSS IN THE CORNER. From the new appointees only Dr Amunugama and Dr Tissa Vitharana are of some class. Faizeer is o.k. a Deputy

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 07:07 AM

Please put security for all media center...now mervin free for every thing..

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 07:12 AM

I can not agree more! We are expecting to see more street dramas directed by Hon. Dr. Mervyn Silva alias modern Dutugemunu.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 07:16 AM

SO ANOTHER TEA PARTY TO ALL JOURNALISTS!! GOVERNMENT WILL HAVE TO ALLOCATE A SPECIAL FUND TO MINISTRIES TO ENTERTAIN NEW MINISTERS, AT THE RATE THEY ARE BEING CHANGED.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 07:22 AM

    All's well that ends well!

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 07:24 AM

i agree with malkanthi's previous comments, well this is just a start

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 07:36 AM
