The Democratic People’s Front (DPF) today said Public Relations Minister Mervyn Silva was causing unwanted tension in Chilaw with his announcement to hold a Sathyagraha against animal sacrifices in a Hindu Temple in Munneswaram.
“The Minister’s notice has already created tension in the aarea. I call upon Mervyn not interfere in this matter and leave the issue to the Hindu organizations in the country, the ministry of religious affairs and to the court of law,” DPF Leader Mano Genesan said in a statement.
He also said his party did not approve animal sacrifices which was also the general opinion of the Hindu Tamil community in this country. But Mr. Ganesan said there were certain sects who continued with these rituals in the Munneswaram temple. He said this had to be brought to an end with the support of Hindu organizations and the ministry of religious affairs. “Minister Mervyn Silva should not dramatize this matter by interfering in this sensitive issue. It would create conditions not conducive to the religious harmony that exists between Hindus and Buddhists in Munneswaram,” Mr. Ganesan’s statement said. (Yohan Perera)

for once I agree with the mad-doctor. The barbaric slaughter of these animals for sacrifice must stop. How can the taking of an innocent life in such an uncivilized manner be part of any religion???
Andrew Pitugala Monday, 27 August 2012 04:02 AM
So much fuss about killing animals, when they are done all over for human consumption. Mervyn and others should concentrate on stopping killing of human beings, child abuse, rape and drug peddling which are really very great crimes, which certainly will be appreciated by all law abiding people.
Vernon Sunday, 26 August 2012 02:23 PM
Very true. But what do you expect from joker politicians who wants to get cheap publicity by these gimmicks at what ever cost. The hierarchy of the party keeping this joker is to be blamed.
Rubert Vanderkoon Monday, 27 August 2012 09:03 AM
And you have a point here?

Muslims also do this during Bakhiri Id, only difference is they consume it. So will the Dr. try to interfere in that too?

Potta Sunil Sunday, 26 August 2012 03:44 PM
If any sect has been doing it for centuries, let them continue. No one has the authority to interfere with other's FAITH.

Killing any creature in the name of God is reprehensible
LENKACT Sunday, 26 August 2012 04:57 PM
We support politician Mervin Silva on this issue. Animal sacrifice should be stop immediately. STOP KILLING ANIMALS PLEASE!!!!! Go back to your country and do these. PLEASE DON'T DO IT HERE, STOP KILLING INNOCENT ANIMALS PLEASE.
Ajith Sunday, 26 August 2012 05:24 PM
I thought the President said, there are no minorities or majorities, all Sri Lankans....Also, as Buddhist country why not we stop the total killings of animals for meat and stop eating, beaf, mutton, chicken etc.,...
Minister Monday, 27 August 2012 05:29 AM
Unwanted for you. But wanted for many others for survival.
Lankeshwara Sunday, 26 August 2012 05:14 PM
People concerned about slaughtering innocent animals to scarify. What about tens of thousands of the same being slaughtered -both legally and illegally - for human consumption in this country, daily? Had this sudden 'saint' closed all the chicken, mutton, pork, beef stalls in his electorate? Well, does he expect our adivaasi community to become 'vegetarians'? These moves cannot be accounted for sensible campaigns, but egoism fueled by sheer political motives and/or ethnocentrism. In a plural society we should be able to tolerate these things. But you can spiritually oppose it, like many others. If it is not something acceptable in your religious thought and let them bring the deserved suffering with them for all violence they commit! Thats Buddhism, not to abuse noble Buddhism for your political motives.
Rohith Monday, 27 August 2012 05:20 AM
Animal sacrifice is not a part of Hinduism. This is nothing but devil worshiping. All animal sacrificing should be banned including Haj Qurban..
Ajith Sunday, 26 August 2012 05:37 PM
Concept can be agreed, but his actions cannot.. What was he doing being with the Government. Why cant he work with his fellow colleagues like from Ministry of Religious Affairs, and also work on regulations... the problem is , he is creating a drama and sensitizing the issue further....Work with them to solve the problem...

Lenkact, what do you mean by 'go back to your country and do these'?
kumar Monday, 27 August 2012 09:48 AM
I wanted to point out that killing of a life is not accepted in Hinduism. It is completely against the religion. The people who are associated with this kind of slaughter are mostly attracted by Black magic than proper Hinduism. But why this Merwin Silva is against it is not because he loves the animals. He wanted to get some support from majority Sinhalese by doing this type of act .
Lionheart Monday, 27 August 2012 05:32 AM
LTTE sympathisers do not care about animal lives. They slaughtered sinhalese en masse in busses, trains and religious places and how could we expect them to stop killing goats and fowl? The guys are half wit barbarians and I 100% support Mervyn Silva on this issue though I dont support him on his other dramas and verbal outbursts....Gather around all animal lovers and stop these murderers from doing this. This is SL and we cannot accept some PUSARI Cult just for the sake of it.
NS Monday, 27 August 2012 09:58 AM

Not good to eat animal flesh but ok to kill humans in this so-called Buddhist country? Get your priorities right man.
Lobo Tuesday, 28 August 2012 11:42 AM
well said Rubert Vanderkoon. Most of these guys have jumped on to the band-wagon not seeing the actual picture. They dont realize that since animal killing cannot be stopped the next best this is to see they are killed as humanely as possible and not in the crude outdated manner practiced here today.
Raja Perera Monday, 27 August 2012 07:47 AM
Mr. Mano Ganeshan, please don't try to stop or change the nature of God's creations. How dare you try to stop a dog from barking?

Very true, why eat Beef, chicken ,pork or fish for that matter.

How come he opens his mouth against Mervyn in this issue but not the other issues Mervyn was involved with? Is he only interested in Tamil affairs?
Rubert Vanderkoon Monday, 27 August 2012 07:57 AM
That you deal with it or help Mervyn this time and propose him to to do that next. He is doing something admireable and he deserves support.

do you know how many animals sacrifice during the ramadan festival.. ??
Rubert Vanderkoon Monday, 27 August 2012 07:59 AM
My point exactly Nodrog! This is a peaceful attempt to stop barbarism (committed on mythical grounds even). If somebody else wants to do it in a different way, they should try that without blocking this effort as well but this time, this minister's attempt is praiseworthy!
Imran Hussein Tuesday, 28 August 2012 06:54 AM
He wouldnt dare to. We are not killing animals for fun.

buffaloa and lionheart... you both are racists pigs! stop making every issue an ethnic one. stop making general remarks and remember all sinhalese did not support or condone what happened to the tamils and also not all tamils are tigers.

What are the so called animals? They are goats and chicken. and are not considerd pets. These animals are anyway there for human consumption so what's the harm. In the same note Minister M should then take up cudgels with the bigh super market chains as they also sell all kinds of poultry and meat and slaughtered under appaling conditions.
Wimal_Modawansa Monday, 27 August 2012 03:34 AM
Kill only humans?????

Rubert Vanderkoon Monday, 27 August 2012 08:41 AM
You epitomise the era we are in, which is medieval times. It is not the extinction of animals but animal cruelty we talk about here. It won't happen overnight but with small steps like this what the minister is doing, we might do giant leaps by stopping killing altogether at some point. Wherever there is some effort to stop animal killing, it must be admired.
Imran Hussein Monday, 27 August 2012 08:31 AM
Crearting unrest among communities is admirable? He himself is a carnivore (and many others). If he loves what he is doing he should find legal ways not taking law in his hands. By the way how about Veddhos hunting and domesticating wild elepahants in curel means in the name of rituals. This mad fellow is a nutcase.
tensioned Monday, 27 August 2012 08:22 AM
yeah righ , on the muslim festival day u can beg from your muslim friends for a shawan which is made out of fried chicken and beef or mutton with boiled egg that go to eat but qurban is a problem for u guys very funny

What about the cruelty from other religions. (Rituals)
buffaloa citizen Monday, 27 August 2012 08:44 AM
I do agree animal sacrifice is wrong. But then what were sinhalese buddhists doing in 1956, 1977 and 1983 riots? These were not done by sinhalese pusari's nor was it done by trained sinhalese butchers...but by ordinary sinhalese neighbours and so called good buddhist citizens...and the carnage was not for few hours but for days and weeks.
weha Sunday, 26 August 2012 02:03 PM
I believe people should change their ways of practicing their religions depending on the society they live in. specially the minorities. In SL killing animals is a very sensitive topic. even muslim leaders should try to be more lenient with laws such as asking women to cover everything up etc. I don't think Gods up their would mind such changes.
jack Sunday, 26 August 2012 02:17 PM

idiots like Mervyn always start conflict in the country but the poor masses pay for that. Shut that idiot up.
