The UNP supporter who set himself on fire last evening outside the UNP Sirikotha headquarters died early this morning after suffering serious burn injuries, sources at the National hospital said.

UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya had said yesterday that the victim was a UNP supporter and had been ‘disgusted’ over the ‘disunity’ of the UNP and had stressed the need of unity within the party. (YP)

High literacy rate in Sri Lanka! For what?

    Geronimo Tuesday, 27 July 2010 02:02 AM

How many more such incidents will it take before Ranil and the UNP will settle down????

Ping Pong Tuesday, 27 July 2010 09:09 AM

Unity is the pearl, not only for UNP but for the whole of 'Pearl in the Indian ocean'

    Batangala Tuesday, 27 July 2010 02:19 AM

Disunity is the cause for the UNP members suicide according to Karu who polled amazingly low number of votes in Gampaha district. What do Ranil and Sajith have to say?

    Ruki Tuesday, 27 July 2010 02:28 AM

    RW, in gods name, GO!!!

Calistus Jayatilleke Tuesday, 27 July 2010 02:32 AM

What a waste of life. He could have very well gained some publicity through the media if he engaged himself in a "fast unto death" just like WW did and then surreptiously eat some biscuits and drink some water when going to the toilet. That way he would have attracted more publicity to his protest and also become a hero for his party.

Raj Kumar Tuesday, 27 July 2010 02:34 AM

Ranil must take full responsibility for this unfortunate incident and resign from the leadership immediately.

    prikumara Tuesday, 27 July 2010 02:39 AM

good example, to die for a cause. weerawansa should learn from this. if MR had known about this guy before, he would be the one who will fast at the un gate.

Tharaka Chanaka Tuesday, 27 July 2010 02:48 AM

Rata Perata Tuesday, 27 July 2010 02:59 AM

Ranil at least now please let others come forward, you have destroyed the party. Its time to revamp and go forward!

Stewart Sloan Tuesday, 27 July 2010 03:00 AM

Now this is an example of dedication to the cause, no intravenous drips, no massive international press coverage, just dedication and commitment.

Credits Go to......... Finally Opposition leader survived....
Well directed drama... god bless the poor guy....

    Wasantha Tuesday, 27 July 2010 03:09 AM

A genuine UNP loyalist. In vain, he lost his life. He should have not been so emotional. The ultimate loosers are no one else, only his close family members.

    sanj Tuesday, 27 July 2010 03:11 AM

No leader to save the victim even. People should refrain from extreme politics. This is where you end up with. Will UNP unite after poor's death? useless acts.

    NB Tuesday, 27 July 2010 03:11 AM

Oh my God... Poor Sri Lanka....

    Siribiris Tuesday, 27 July 2010 03:17 AM

Stupid fellow.... But REST IN PEACE !!!!

    Ruwan Tuesday, 27 July 2010 03:24 AM

Even though his action unacceptable, he has given a strong massage to leaders how they are week and inactive.

    Jayamanna Tuesday, 27 July 2010 03:29 AM

    Stupidity at the best.

    harris Tuesday, 27 July 2010 03:31 AM

Do you really think he is a UNP supporter who has committed suicide ? Or is he a mentally disturbed person. No matter in UNP which warrants this action other than the leadership trying to exist perpetually.

Hope this lunatic is an exception

Smart Aleck Tuesday, 27 July 2010 10:27 AM

It is stupid to commit suicide for a Political party or its leader. One should live and fight for a cause or one's country and if one dies in the process then that would be honourable.

    Archunan Tuesday, 27 July 2010 03:55 AM

Volunteers are patriotic, Leaders are hypocrites

Shiran Dhammika Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:00 AM

unless the leadership change there will be more such incidents near future.

    Ravi Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:01 AM

At lesat Ranil should realize now t hand over the leadership to a young person at party and go home now

    mnsmart Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:01 AM

    Sri Lanka Indianized................

    ajith Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:01 AM

The main cause for his death is Ranil.
For god sake please bow down from leadership.
It will be sanity for the dead man.

    arasoysa Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:02 AM

Compare this honest man with our dishonest politicians who drink orange juice and water while fasting unto death. Still our people are honest and we can rebuild this country one day

    Farook Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:09 AM

Don't make this a political affair, please. An innocent man has died. It may have nothing to do with UNP.

    lanka Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:10 AM

Not for Unity. Its for change in continuously defeated Leadership.

    Arshad Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:13 AM

Hope atleast now they will realise the need for unity in the party,

    Babanis Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:15 AM

Sad! Is Ranil and company worth a human life.

    Lasantha Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:18 AM

I am eagerly waiting to see when WW doing this!!

    anura W Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:18 AM

Stupid act. Not second to the fasting drill display by General Gonchaudha. This shows the lack of human centric political vision in SL.

    Dhiga Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:20 AM

With all due respect to the guy, "stupid" is the only word I can think of about his act. By the way is he related to the ex-JVPer who tried 'Hara kari' couple of weeks ago?

The Police must investigate it properly, may be he didn't want to set himself on fire but just wanted to pretend, but somebody would have set fire without his notice, like the Tamil films.

    Holman Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:34 AM

May he rest in peace. After watching 360 Degrees political programme last night, I too was sad to hear what has happened to the UNP.

Aftermath of his death, who will be the care taker of his family is the unsolved problem forever. There are many ways to express own interests by attracting public that could be learned from Wimal.

    maluman Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:41 AM

To commit suicide over party reforms is a stupid deed and waste of a life. That being said, may he rest in peace. And may he be reborn a more intelligent being in his next birth.

    SidathB Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:47 AM

No wonder UNP supporters are frustrated as the party is lead and governed by persons who are anti -nationalistic . All UNP leaders HAVE only ambition , to grab the power at any cost and want to run (ruin) the country like in the period 1977- 1994 as lackeys of the West. So they are supporting all anti-Sri Lankan direct and indirect efforts by western countries with out any shame, Voters are no more affiliated to one party like during post 1994 era but float to vote such anti-nationalistic elements out.
UNP leadership and its cronies have miserably failed to realised this reality !!!.

    anura Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:49 AM

What a waste of petrol.Price of petrol will go up again if petrol is wasted like this.

    nala Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:51 AM

Dying for your country is one thing (even suicide) dying for a political party is absolute stupidity. (for that matter a bankcrupt party lead by a wimp).
This is the problem with our people. All party fanatics but no country fanatics.

    DHA Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:54 AM

So stupid what you did man.....see how much grievance you would've brought to your family members....!!!...Your family has to bear even the funeral cost....this is a cruel world man, you just threw away your life...!!!

    Malcolm Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:56 AM

we have self immolation.....students of university's die, infants thrown into rivers, rape of children by their guardians....young girls attempt suicide........and yet we stay silent.......is this the country that was once called Paradise...?? It seems like we have so many social issues that need to be addressed urgently...and yet...the band plays on....SRI LANKA -------- SMALL MIRACLE -------- Looks like the plot has been lost....we are out of the loop, basically screwed ourselves with weak leaders, lies and deceit for which WE are to blame....WE JUST DON'T CARE ANYMORE...!!!!!!!!

Top Sri Lankan Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:59 AM

Either he had been watching too many indian movies or just wanted to commit suicide and chose this way. Every single human brain is so powerful and can do wonders, guess he never tried anything.

    Sammy Tuesday, 27 July 2010 05:00 AM

The people who run a party is what it is made of. Are the present lot of people who run UNP or for that matter any present day politician, worth dying for?

    Vishnu Tuesday, 27 July 2010 05:04 AM

Dear friend who sacrificed your life >>> you are gone. Your family will suffer. Soon your heroic deed would be history. You have died in vain my friend. Power and party politics whether it is UNP or ruling party is not going to solve our problems. Wish you were more conscious, and thought alternatives your self minus third grade politicians. May you be born again with a conscious mind to conquer evil and dispel political darkness.

Gayan Samarasekara Tuesday, 27 July 2010 05:26 AM

You shouldn't simply blame Ranil. Unity within the party is of utmost interest in gaining political success. Ranil is giving UNP his best to secure it as a strong party in national politics. The disputes are naturally increased as UNP is in the opposition. If the leadership was transferred to someone else, the conditions could have been worse. Also there is no qualified substitution to Ranil at the moment. However the suicide case and its messsage should have thoroughly taken.

    RIYADH Tuesday, 27 July 2010 05:27 AM

Why are people so stupid? We are ONLY here to VOTE and nothing more, is it worth this guy killing him self? May he rest in peace.

Bluff Bluff Tuesday, 27 July 2010 05:28 AM

Its a sad end to the United National Party. The present leader will hit the last nail on its coffin.

    Bakamoona Tuesday, 27 July 2010 05:28 AM

Though Mr Ranil W is very experienced there's something lacking. Everyone's waiting for Sajith Premadasa to be the leader. Any and every political party leader should be able to understand the poor man's feelings, not only winning and dinning with the upper class. Because at the end only the poor man goes to vote, the upper class is lazy to go to the polling booth. MR is clever in getting the love from sanga, veda, guru, govi, kamkaru and this is the reason for his unstoppable win.

    Ajith Tuesday, 27 July 2010 06:01 AM

    Sad waste of life.

Why Ranil ? he is the best opp leader of the 21st century..dont blame him for this man's stupidity

    Raj Tuesday, 27 July 2010 06:27 AM

Why blaming only Ranil? You need two hands to clap.
As we all know, there are two factions (or more) in UNP. Doesn't matter who the leader is... without them getting together as a team, we cannot see a brighter future.

Senkadaga Putha Tuesday, 27 July 2010 06:33 AM

He is a fool..which fool will die for politicians..........I am sorry for his family members.

    Nandimithra Tuesday, 27 July 2010 06:56 AM

True leaders resign after one defeat but a series of losses is a debacle - yet Ranil plods on. Take an example from Murali & go.

    Farook Tuesday, 27 July 2010 07:00 AM

Guys, this is not Ranil's fault. Get real. Ranil still is the best leader UNP has. Let him hold the fortress until a better leader emerges. Don't rock the boat.

    Channa Tuesday, 27 July 2010 01:56 AM

What ever twist may be churned out, the ultimate finger points to Ranil. Had he gave up the leadership this tragedy would have not happened.

    Saradial Tuesday, 27 July 2010 01:56 AM

Because of this man’s stupidity, his family is in trouble

    jaya Tuesday, 27 July 2010 01:56 AM

I really feel sorry for such die hard UNPers. Those UNPer's who are at the top have the option to join Mahinda's team but poor followers at the bottom have no alternative they sacrifice their life. When your voice is not heard and vote is not counted there will be no faith towards the party. But there will be leaders without followers in UNP
