A man identified as Rienzi Algama, set himself ablaze opposite the UNP headquarters Sirikotha today and was admitted to the Kalubowila hospital with serious burn injuries. He was later transferred to the Colombo National Hospital.

Speaking to Daily Mirror, UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya confirmed that Algama was a UNP supporter and had been ‘disgusted’ over the ‘disunity’ of the UNP and had stressed the need of unity within the party.

Jayasuriya said, “The supporter contacted me this morning. He remained thoroughly disappointed about the absence of unity in the party. He always spoke about the need to unite. I think he set himself ablaze because if this disappointment.”

Algama is a relative of the late General Lucky Algama and hails from Kelaniya. He had joined the UNP during the Late President J.R Jayawardene era of the 1980’s.

What about fast unto death with the blessings of the monks near UN HQ isn't it a sin?

    RajasH Monday, 26 July 2010 06:10 PM

WW, this is the way to protest! (Not by just 'fasting' with saline drips.)

    nish Monday, 26 July 2010 06:34 PM

Politicians are responsible for making them like this.

    Merveyn Monday, 26 July 2010 06:40 PM

I feel very sorry for this person. He may be an ardent supporter of the UNP, but no political party in the world is worth GIVING-UP YOUR PRECIOUS LIFE for!

    KD Monday, 26 July 2010 08:58 PM

    What a stupid act.

Smart Aleck Monday, 26 July 2010 11:31 PM

It might have been better if one of the "Leaders" did it.

    sally Monday, 26 July 2010 11:35 PM

Who can stand what Ranil & others doing? Live if you really care Fool

    optimist Tuesday, 27 July 2010 01:11 AM

Please do it. Why someone. you can do it my dear without pointing out others.

    Prasanna Tuesday, 27 July 2010 01:14 AM

This Idiot is not a relative of Gen Algama. Please don't disgrace a brave soldier.

    Thomas Tuesday, 27 July 2010 01:35 AM

Is it a stunt similar to fast unto death by Weerawansa????

    Sebastian Tuesday, 27 July 2010 03:10 AM

If Wimal has resorted to this tactic instead of 'fasting' with an intravenous drip in his arm he might have won more respect.

    sltk2004 Tuesday, 27 July 2010 03:24 AM

At all other times people will have to survive somehow by their own, but when someone tries to commit suicide - then the government will intervene...

    Kaps Tuesday, 27 July 2010 03:26 AM

You appear to be living in London! In Sri Lanka we have a very good public hospital system and it works much better than many of the so called developed countries. Will work even better if our politicians get busy working for the people rather than fattening their own coffers.

Ruwan Ferdinandez Monday, 26 July 2010 05:36 PM

Does he not have a family? Why would one put his 'political beliefs' before his family? People need to be taught of the value of life!

    AJ Tuesday, 27 July 2010 03:45 AM

Couldn't he find any good reason to put himself in this kind of danger instead of trying to unite these jokers. I feel so sorry for this poor man. Politicians plying a nice game to get all privileges and make money . These guys sacrificing their life (and their wife and children) blindly. ANICHCHAWATHA SANKARA, SRI LANKA !!!!!!!!!!!!!

    INDIKA Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:13 AM

Why don't you go and set an example rather than talking ???

    INDIKA Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:16 AM

No need. MR is capable of keeping the unity in the party. So no need of that kind of protest.

    INDIKA Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:18 AM

    Well said !!

Indika kolla Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:24 AM

What a stupidity...killed himself for a unity which any single leader of the party doesn't care about

    jeena Tuesday, 27 July 2010 04:33 AM

another one bites the dust, will that change politics ?

    iqbal Tuesday, 27 July 2010 05:34 AM

sri lanka politics is garbage, why did this foolish man do such a thing to his life?
party will remain the same as long as the elephent idiots are there..

    D Tuesday, 27 July 2010 06:04 AM

Sounds like depression, more than anything.

    Ajith Tuesday, 27 July 2010 06:46 AM

Either Mervyn or Wimal would be good, both would be better.

Mr Minority Tuesday, 27 July 2010 07:50 AM

A real hero. Wimal Weerawansa can learn from him and do the same to stop the expert panel on Sri Lanka without being a card board veeraya

    jayanthi Tuesday, 27 July 2010 08:09 AM

This guy is really mad otherwise who can do this foolish action for sinking UNP

    A Tuesday, 27 July 2010 10:59 AM

How do you know that? Are you Gen. Algama's son? By the way he did a foolish thing.

    Che Monday, 26 July 2010 03:00 PM

This a Desperate Plea for the people of Sri Lanka, to wake up,

    Hash Monday, 26 July 2010 01:31 PM

Why o Why !!! ???? Is this a plot by the government or did this man do it as a protest to change the UNP leadership ?

Sam silva Monday, 26 July 2010 01:44 PM

Oh Boy..Please stop..Imagine the number of people that will need to set themselves near temple trees then.....We may not have enough people remaining in SLanka if this happens.

    meranchi Monday, 26 July 2010 01:45 PM

what is the reason for suicide, according to lord buddha that commitment is sin according to the christianity also sin he is not belongs to both religion

    RIYADH Monday, 26 July 2010 01:45 PM

This is too bad!!! What is happening to our country??? can we stop these? the so called leaders should answer

    ragun Monday, 26 July 2010 01:58 PM

Why can't all these protesters take the example set by Wimal.W.

Premalal Perera Monday, 26 July 2010 02:03 PM

Like Wimal he must have though that Ranil will come and rescue him. Poor fellow.

    DeAmO Monday, 26 July 2010 02:17 PM

@ Tharaka Chanaka: Ever consider volunteering??

    LondonLankan_DT Monday, 26 July 2010 02:26 PM

why does the sri lankan tax payer have to pay for this man's stupidity? send him to a private hospital and ask him to pay for his own bloody medical care. no other country would tolerate this.

Kira Kira Monday, 26 July 2010 02:40 PM

He did it in front of the wrong place !!!!

kasun liyanage Monday, 26 July 2010 02:43 PM

OMG, that means still there are certain set of person who are genuinely concerned in party well-being though current leadership is quite oblivious of that.

    Babanis Monday, 26 July 2010 02:47 PM

It there anyone in that building worth a human life. Sad!

    MagodisThuma Monday, 26 July 2010 02:48 PM

Most of the UNPers feel to do so now !.

Tharaka Chanaka Monday, 26 July 2010 01:21 PM

not bad...someone should set him self alight near temple trees now.

    DHA Monday, 26 July 2010 03:07 PM

Poor fellow....think man...think man....your life is more precious than sacrificing it to someone who never cares about you.....!!!....

    Josh Monday, 26 July 2010 03:12 PM

gosh... i thought india was trying to take over SL.. but looks like our own countrymen will make SL like india....

    Helasebala Monday, 26 July 2010 03:28 PM

This is not the first time. Those who have a good memory will remember Buddhist Clergy setting themselves ablaze wanting USA to withdraw from South Vietnam in Colombo somewhere in 1960's

    menaka Monday, 26 July 2010 03:32 PM

    absolute stupidity!

    Helasebala Monday, 26 July 2010 03:33 PM

His life belongs to the state & not to him. Hence govt duty to prevent soul leaving the body!!

    wasanthi Monday, 26 July 2010 03:41 PM

Blind faith is the cause of tregedy. UNP leaders should pay compensations to the family. RW re - think of your stratigies.

    Gayan Monday, 26 July 2010 03:49 PM

Why on earth someone did that for a part like UNP?. Even the most "unified" UNP not going to win an election till 2025!

Thisara Wickramanaya Monday, 26 July 2010 03:51 PM

Of cause. He should have done it in front of UN office. This is the typical mentality of common hardcore UNPers. They think that "Party before Country". What a stupidity.

    Rasika Monday, 26 July 2010 03:53 PM

If you go through the comments, these UNPers always trying to put the finger on governement side for everything. Not the reforms, this is the thing that they should change. if not they will be in the opposition forever.
menaka you are correct, these things are very stupid and there is no word to explain them.

    Helasebala Monday, 26 July 2010 04:00 PM

    H.E. Premadasa too thought so!!

    raj Monday, 26 July 2010 04:04 PM

+ Sri Lankans don't get any social education. As a result, many people are suffering mentally.

    citizen1 Monday, 26 July 2010 05:27 PM

Seems like an unselfish but foolish man, who loves his country more than himself. Perhaps, the only hope he had is now disappearing. He is less blind than the masses, for sure!
