Maldives police have released a British man accused of sparking a bomb scare on a SriLankan Airlines flight, a spokesman said Tuesday, explaining he had been misunderstood by cabin crew, AFP reported.

The elderly passenger was detained on Monday after a false alarm aboard a Colombo-London flight that made an emergency stop in the Maldives, an Indian Ocean atoll nation.

"It was a case of miscommunication between the elderly British passenger and the airline crew," Maldivian police spokesman Ahmed Shiyam told AFP by telephone from the capital Male.

He said the passenger had alerted the crew to a "disturbance in the plane" and the crew had thought he was raising a bomb scare.

At least there high commission would intervene if there's a problem right can we expect the same from ours ???

This is not funny but an insult to Sri Lanka. If you have flown Sri Lankan 5 years ago and if you travel now, you can understand the quality of the cabin crew. Just think about their service, their behaviour, their politeness, their language language skills. It is a shame that the prestige of Sri Lankan is no more.
Something is seriously wrong with the recruitment process.

Was it the British who couldn't speak English or, the SriLankan cabin crew who couldn't understand English ?

    Lal Tuesday, 15 February 2011 10:55 AM

was he released because UK HC intervened with possible threats?

    Pilot Tuesday, 15 February 2011 08:01 AM

Come on you pommie, Sri Lankans understand English as well as you do. Surely experienced cabin crew know the difference between a disturbance and a bomb threat?
