Should not we never start to develop then? A country cannot be developed overnight. We've started and we'll grow on..

    Sanjaya Thursday, 18 November 2010 09:18 AM

Nothing wrong doing in a new way.

    snf4 Thursday, 18 November 2010 09:23 AM

Frogs do not know they are frogs. The well they are living in is their Asia.

    MK Thursday, 18 November 2010 09:28 AM

There is a beginning for everything.. this the beginning. Singapore dint look like that when their leader started it. It takes decades of sustained development. dont make foolish comments. And dear Mallie... if you watched, a Chinese commercial ship arrived after Jetliner.

    dam Thursday, 18 November 2010 09:35 AM

    Mallie
Did you walke just after your were born.

    Wara Thursday, 18 November 2010 09:45 AM

When constructing a bridge in a road, we have to consider faster way. If it's constructed by concrete, it take longer time causing troubles to the vehicle users. This is in build harbour. But it's because of the ground situation of the area. Due to the bed rock it's easiler and cheaper to build the harbour inland. But when come to Colombo harbour it covers huge area of Sea. Don't think narrow and partical.

I lived in Singapore early 1960′s…..
When land was acquired to expand the Singapore Port….
Negative “Naysayers”….like you – asked why does a small island like Singapore need such a large port….
Today Singapore Port is the 2nd largest Container port in the world….
Similarly Hambantota Harbour will lead in the future economic development of Srilanka…

    Lalin Thursday, 18 November 2010 10:32 AM

Where is the commercial ship that was expected to berth????

    Darren Thursday, 18 November 2010 10:39 AM

Your comment is true to your name.

    Nalin Thursday, 18 November 2010 10:57 AM

In reply to all the negative comments here...
None of the countries mentioned above became model economies overnight. They too developed from scratch under similar circumstances (Japan, S. Korea etc.)
There is no question, Sri Lanka will develop at a very rapid pace now.
Unfortunately, those without vision will be left behind...

    MaPer Thursday, 18 November 2010 12:00 PM

Even the coronation of the Queen and installation of President Barack Obama take a week long celebration, with the closure of schools (during the school semester), businesses, roads, etc. planting of trees (which will never be tended to after that) and tamashas at the expense of the tax payers. No wonder we are the miracle of Asia.

    ase Thursday, 18 November 2010 12:01 PM

volk, in 1960s, we read " sri Lanka is a developing country " 1970 the same, 80s.90s.2000s now 2010, when when will be sl a developed country, countries like Singapore, Malaysian have reached their goal and they have over taken us and now we sing the song of miracle with mr, believe who ever want we have at the moment minus development with a huge sum of debt, if we go further our colaps is not far

Concerned Citizen Thursday, 18 November 2010 07:25 PM

Singapore had Lee Kwan Yew....Sri Lanka has MR...that is the difference!

    vathora Friday, 19 November 2010 12:41 AM

    nice name for you.

    manjula Friday, 19 November 2010 09:46 AM

yeah, that's true we can't be miracle of Asia. The reason is this country has people like you who even can't think positively and who even can't think about progress.

    shovini Friday, 19 November 2010 12:42 PM

    pathetic.

    Kumarasiri Friday, 19 November 2010 12:52 PM

Wish Sri Lanka all the best with this new port facility.

    upul Saturday, 20 November 2010 01:08 PM

over the last many decades the biggest obstacle faced by our leaders, when genuine national development was considered, was the lack of popular support in the form of parliament majority ! luckily we now have a strong willed capable leader, who can force through the required bills & put in place the legal frame work, which is essential !!! the need for quality educational & medical facilities has been an urgent crying need ,but was hindered due to the lack of political will !! countries like s'pore developed due to pragmatic & ruthless leaders who were able to control the political landscape !!!! now SL is guided by such a leader!!!
we should feel lucky & pay homage to all the deities for providing us with this golden opportunity!!!!!

    Hassen Thursday, 18 November 2010 06:57 AM

First go around Asia..... see countries like Singapore, China, Japan...
And then you will realize how foolish is this propaganda "the miracle of Asia"
Oh my countrymen..... why can't we realize the truth and step out of darkness..... and avoid being cheated over and over again?

    Ryan Thursday, 18 November 2010 07:08 AM

First clean up your head filled with sewer and then look around.

Now Sri Lanka has finally stated going. UNP era ruined us as we were much better than Singapore in 1977. Sri Lanka now is the 2nd fastest growing country in the world thats faster than Malaysia. We have a strong Buddhist culture and people who can build developed civilizations over 2000 years ago. We cannot be compared with Malaysia or Singapore. All this time West controlled us but now thats over and we are free to grow.
