The LTTE international network has offered to co-operate with the UN panel appointed by UN Secretary General Ban ki-moon to advice him on Sri Lanka and also urged the committee to protect witnesses who come forward to testify.

The LTTE also urged the panel to eventually publish its findings in order to ensure complete transparency, to help launch a needed public discourse about the violations of international law and to undertake the necessary remedial measures to ensure that this shall never happen again.

“We therefore offer our full cooperation to the UN's panel of investigators and we are willing to provide a large number of first-hand evidence to aid the panel. Despite the panel’s declaration not to visit the country, we call the UN to independently and freely gather first-hand accounts about the atrocities committed from the very population of the Vanni region, who will be able to depict the reality of the massacres,” US based LTTE activist and a member of the LTTE Transnational Government Visvanathan Rudrakumarn said in an email.

The LTTE however raised concern regarding the length of the investigation saying the scheduled four month period of investigation by a small panel of three seems to be too short to guarantee a just evaluation of the large scale of crimes committed last year.

“We therefore request the UN to extend its period of investigation to be able to draw an adequate report to a situation that is often called as the worst contemporary form of violation of international law,” Visvanathan Rudrakumarn said. (Daily Mirror online)

LTTE AND SARATH FONSEKA READY TO ASSIST UN. PLEASE SRI LANKANS UNDERSTAND THE SITUATION NOW. THEY BOTH ARE IN SAME SIDE TO DESTROY THE COUNTRY.

    wicky Wednesday, 30 June 2010 06:23 AM

If you do not question, then you are not a responsible member of the UN. But dont expect others to keep quiet when we do international crimes.

    RajasH Wednesday, 30 June 2010 06:27 AM

KP now represents the Government and not the Tamils.

    RajasH Wednesday, 30 June 2010 06:30 AM

They are not mediating, but investigating. So any evidence from any quarters should be welcome.

    aaaaaaaaaaaa Wednesday, 30 June 2010 06:30 AM

what ever the UN decides it should protect the people of this country and assure justice a word not known to the government of SL is done

    wicky Wednesday, 30 June 2010 06:32 AM

Good . Hurry up and do it and show these Idiots how it is like living alone on the top of a remote mountain without even water to drink.

    aaaaaaaaaaaa Wednesday, 30 June 2010 06:33 AM

well said aranga de silva now the government is terrorizing all the citizens of this country.

    kris Wednesday, 30 June 2010 06:35 AM

Who are we to inquire?. UN is already inquiring into many war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan against US. Whether US or Sri Lanka's war crime is a war crime. Fighting a war is ok, giving wrong orders is bad but good armies like in Sri Lanka do not carryout such orders. So SF should come and give evidance of bad orders given by superiors although not carried out by our Army.

    A lankan Citizen Wednesday, 30 June 2010 06:45 AM

LTTE TO ASSIT PANEL - ARE THERE ANYMORE LTTE MEMBERS AROUND?

    ahamed Wednesday, 30 June 2010 09:18 AM

When the LTTE was committing crimes and bombing civilian targets UN calls it Internal affairs and stood out of it. Why this sudden love for LTTE Suddenly.........

    raj Wednesday, 30 June 2010 09:24 AM

yes that is a old story ... many courts and country have investigated and agreed on that LTTE is a terrorist organization and banned them... now this new panel is to investigate what happened during the final battle ground... who killed more civilians ? Government or LTTE

    Saro Wednesday, 30 June 2010 10:05 AM

The obvious, why does the suspect in criminal cases run away from the police?

    Kaps Wednesday, 30 June 2010 06:22 AM

Well said Nihal. Imagine the Taliban assisting a UN inquiry into deaths of Pakistani civilians by US drones?

Aan Balan Wednesday, 30 June 2010 11:01 AM

It looks like LTTE a country with a seat in UN

    Senthi Wednesday, 30 June 2010 11:19 AM

UN is an independent body which is formed to look after the welfare of every human so they have full rights to investigate any war crime in any country democratically. Why Srilankan government is highly worried about the UN investigation, if they have not done any crimes during the last few days of the war? It shows that they are criminals, so investigation is unavoidable.
Tamils have the rights to give any evidence for investigation because they are the people who are suffered in the hands of Srilanka.

    reporter Wednesday, 30 June 2010 12:14 PM

Good...then don't let them assist. Cooperate with the UN panel and let them visit SL....that shouldn't be a problem right?

    Aadhi Wednesday, 30 June 2010 12:56 PM

    You bet!
Have you been trusting the Rajapaksa brothers???
    Haha ha!

    vajira Wednesday, 30 June 2010 01:26 PM

We can now see on who's behalf this whole exercise is being conducted.

    raj Wednesday, 30 June 2010 01:48 PM

if the government can use LTTE KP, what prevent UN using LTTE's corporation for an investigation purposes.

    joshan Wednesday, 30 June 2010 06:18 PM

Dear Editor, the TGTE has released this statement, not the LTTE!

    Bashir Wednesday, 30 June 2010 06:58 PM

The LTTE is also to be investigated, hence the UN panel should set about its job both impartially and credibly!

    Sinhaya Wednesday, 30 June 2010 08:03 PM

Assist? They are the promoters of this UN panel!

    Reality Thursday, 01 July 2010 06:09 AM

The panel appointed by Mr.Ban ki-moon to advice him on Sri Lanka regarding human rights violation shall advise him not only on Sri Lankan government but also the human rights violation and war crimes against LTTE. Since TGTE (Transnational Government of Tamil Elam is new body of LTTE has agreed to give support to the committee they can start investigating on LTTE war crimes first without wasting time. It is better to investigate not only the last stage violation but also last couple of years.

    Roshan Wednesday, 30 June 2010 05:56 AM

Yes, if the LTTE give evidence, it will be one sided. The Govt should allow the UN panel to visit SL so that they will know the real picture.

    Haris Wednesday, 30 June 2010 05:33 AM

UN need not ask the advice of LTTE. Instead, it should function as an impartial mediator.

    Citizen Wednesday, 30 June 2010 05:42 AM

We never questioned the US or UK on their inquires on war crimes. It is impartial and it protects their social justice.Likewise We have establish an independent judicial system which can work without political influence. It will protect the nation from foreign interventions.

Kumar Rubasooriya Wednesday, 30 June 2010 05:43 AM

It is not LTTE, it is TGTE (Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam in contact with UN. Though both are cut from same cloth.

gaan mara lanka Wednesday, 30 June 2010 05:47 AM

Belive me by denying the UN PAnel visa to sri lanka they will be hell bent on thir pursue and I am sure UN EMBARGO will be sanctioned and big man called to haque for questioning

    anura Wednesday, 30 June 2010 05:48 AM

It is good.Otherwise so-called 'panel' will have no work for next four months. But utimately Nothing

    Kaps Wednesday, 30 June 2010 05:49 AM

Has the UN ever been impartial in the past couple of decades? They have to have something to please all their official and unofficial pay masters.

    Juki Wednesday, 30 June 2010 05:52 AM

since SF and LTTE have agreed to assist, looks like the panel will get its report afterall. Wonder whether GOSL can oppose or even comment on the findings of the report once it is presented to Ban-ki since it was not a party to the panel's findings.

    Wisdom Wednesday, 30 June 2010 05:52 AM

WE ALL KNEW THIS WAS A PLAN BY THE UN FROM DAY ONE.

SO WHO ELSE ARE THEY GOING TO INVOLVE NOW?

    GARETH EVANS?

Matara Kolla Wednesday, 30 June 2010 05:53 AM

Murshid Idroos Wednesday, 30 June 2010 05:55 AM

Sri lanka should suspend the UN membership.

    RTA Wednesday, 30 June 2010 05:33 AM

SF has also agreed to assist (can some one put 2 and 2 together please?)

    Wasantha Wednesday, 30 June 2010 05:57 AM

Is the tamil Diaspora and international network two different groups or two sides of the same coin. In which side does KP represent?

    sltk2004 Wednesday, 30 June 2010 06:02 AM

We should prepare a comprehensive list of all the bombings, killings etc done by LTTE, and submit that list to this three-member panel to investigate. After all those too are violations of law.

Nihal Fernando Wednesday, 30 June 2010 06:03 AM

LTTE i s a banned terrorist organization. If they are going to assist the UN panel how can we see any tranparency? This is going to be like asking a thief's mother to soothe- saying about her son. What a joke!.

aranga de silva Wednesday, 30 June 2010 06:03 AM

LTTE terrorised the country for 30 years killing innocent Sinhala, tamil, muslim and other nationalities. Finally they were defeated with alot of sacrifices.

Now why are they shouting for war crimes? Also why do some sri lankans support this UN Panel?

    gunda Wednesday, 30 June 2010 06:06 AM

Only the Sri Lankan Govt is running away. What can we guess from it?

    Amjad Wednesday, 30 June 2010 06:07 AM

This is the biggest joke, The terrorist are going to assist the UN

    malkanthi Wednesday, 30 June 2010 06:09 AM

SF should cooperate as he was the Commander in charge of the entire operation!

    Jix Wednesday, 30 June 2010 06:16 AM

Do not underestimate the prowess of the state in their response to this. I hope the government too appoints qualified, experienced and proactive candidates to deal with the situation without underestimating the consequences of the outcome of this panel appointed by the UN.

    bash Wednesday, 30 June 2010 06:18 AM

Need to act intelligently in this issue, arrogance will not do us any help, Sri Lanka could be branded as a rouge state very soon, like zimbabwe etc

    IM Wednesday, 30 June 2010 06:19 AM

Terrorists to advise UN. UN is taking world terrorism to a new level.....
