Liquor prices up

The Excise Duty on liquor and ethyl alcohol has been revised with effect from October 6, the Finance Ministry announced today.

Following the increase, beer manufacturers have increased the price of beer and arrack from last Sunday. Accordingly, the price of one litre of alcohol has been increased by Rs. 63 and a litre of beer by Rs. 10.

Meanwhile, Distilleries Company of Sri Lanka (DCSL) said it had increased the prices of all varieties of arracks by Rs 20-40 a bottle.
The price of liquor was last increased in July as well. (Mahinda Nissanka)

Your talking bout being broad minded and saying bad for health? Why don't you look at your own pollutants and see how much harm you bring to the environment and your own family. Stop using plastic, fuel, electricity, cell phones and every other modern facility that emits health risks.. then talk about companies paying for cancer. Also your talking bout wasting public money but turn a blind eye on wastage by the government so please solve the bigger issue first without being so closed minded.

Be broad minded. Poor should not smoke because it will make them moor poor and increase health cost.

Think we should let the Cigarette companies to pay the full expense of cancer due to smorking, active or passive.

Increase any amount !! they will still use the same quantity !!

Are you living in Sri Lanka Len? when you say majority of Buddhists plus Muslims abstain for any sort of illicit drugs or liquor! which means those of other religions are the liquor drinkers wake up mister!! there is no religion when it comes to liquor be it buddhist or muslims. Very good move drinking in Sri Lanka is mainly pastime for Western tourist and locale Christians. Majority of Sri Lankan’s who are Buddhists plus Muslims community abstain indulging in any sort of illicit drugs or from consuming Liquor except for a hand full wannabe Westerners.

1) Increases revenues on liquor sales
2) Puts lots more money in the pockets of kasippu mudalalis who can now be "persuaded" to increase their "donations" to politicians and police.
