Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Wednesday made public her government’s difficulties that arose out of frequent visits of Sri Lankan officials, army officers and VIPs to Tamil Nadu without informing the State government.

In her letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the Chief Minister referred to the visit of Thirukumaran Nadesan, brother-in-law of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, to Rameswaram on January 9 and 10 and an attempted attack on him. “As there was no information to this Government either from the Sri Lankan government or from the government of India, no precautionary security measures could be taken,” she said.

She also pointed to the letter from the Deputy High Commissioner for Sri Lanka in Southern India addressed to the Chief Secretary to the State government and the letter from the External Affairs Ministry’s Joint Secretary. “The tone and tenor of the letter is unwarranted, unacceptable and totally unjustified,” Ms Jayalalithaa pointed out.

Adverting to the local perception of the Sri Lankan government’s conduct on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, she said the Sri Lankan government had completely failed in ensuring the local Tamils’ right “to live with dignity, self-respect and equal constitutional status on par with the Sinhalese.” Against this background, there had been instances in the recent past when Sri Lankan VIPs and other dignitaries come on private visits to Tamil Nadu without informing the State government.

The State government, in its letters of September 16, 2011 and February 24, 2012, brought to the notice of Union Ministries of External Affairs and Home regarding the difficulties faced by it owing to the frequent visits of Sri Lankan officials, army officers and VIPs without informing it.

“In view of the prevailing situation, it would be appropriate that the Government of Tamil Nadu is given prior intimation about the visits of Sri Lankan dignitaries and it would also be appreciated if the government of India discourages such frequent visits to Tamil Nadu and allows such visits only after consulting the Government of Tamil Nadu in future,” she added. From London to New York and Chennai to Singapore, our guys are good at writing letters to annoy and in return make the matters worse.

    Just like in this case.

When all the Doctors and Professors are employed for their English skills, this is what happens as they are merely academics and have no 'street smartness'.

The CM of Tn has a right to write to PM re matters pertaining to her State, perhaps, she wants to avoid unnecessary problems to the visiting dignitaries from SL; it is better our Dy Ambassador is kept infomed of such visits by VIP from SL, so that the CM can provide securities to avoid similar situations. As Sri Lankan we must respect who is the CM of TN. Tn is a highly developed place, ordinary citizen of TN are extremely friendly and honest; my recent visit after 30 years proved it beyond doubt. We Sri Lankans should not criticize our neighbour and its rulers unnecessarily; give respect and take respect.

    She was right because:
    1. Our guys there wrote about the incident that logga's BIL was involved. If TN govt knew of his visit that would not have happened

    2. Another important reason which was widely reported in TN but not in SL, that happened in February .

A Minister from Upcountry, highly intoxicated tried to misbehaved with a female staff in the hotel bar. When minister was unstoppable, the hotel staffs called the Police.

But he told them that he can not be touched as he is a guest of Indian Central Government and carrying a message from our President (?).

Total disgrace and she is magnanimous in NOT mentioning this in her letter.

I wonder why our guys in Chennai did not write about this to our President.

Infact all the patriotic Sri Lankan should stop visiting TN for any purpose & stop buying South Indian products worldwide. They are promoting anti Sri Lankan propoganda. Why should someone bother going to the smelly cities in TN anyway?

For the little that I know of protocol, a notice will be sent on formal/official visits... there need not be any communication for private visits... Why is this lady jumping up and down... because she couldn't give an audience to our VIPs?
