Lanka concerned over Palestine

A A A

Sri Lanka has expressed deep concerns on the current deteriorating humanitarian situation in Palestine and other Occupied Palestinian Territories and called on the parties concerned to maintain restraint in order to ameliorate the situation on the ground and help advance the peace process to which both parties were committed.

It was Sri Lanka’s firm belief that it was only through meaningful negotiations that a two State settlement, as envisaged by all, could be achieved. Thereby an end could be put to the Israeli occupation of the Occupied Palestinian Territories and a sovereign, independent and viable Palestinian State could be established and the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people realized.

Sri Lanka agreed that the occupation continued to be the main cause of widespread human rights violations. Therefore, there was an urgent need to put an end to all unlawful settlement activities which had led to the displacement of thousands of Palestinians from their homes. There was also a need to put an end to the continuing blockade on the Palestinian civilian population in Gaza. (Daily Mirror online)

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 09:36 AM

We as Sri Lankans are more concerned about the situation over here than Palestine.

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 09:48 AM

First put your own house in order before this concern over Palestine.
The situation here is just as bad if not worse.
    What a joke!!!

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 09:49 AM

Lets be concern with our own people first. Lets give the IDP's a life and a home before we pass judgment on others

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 10:02 AM

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 04:56 PM

Please clean your 'yard' first, before 'entering' another's.

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 04:57 PM

    Another election 'gundu.'

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 10:28 AM

Wow! Now the EU will certainly consider Sri Lanka well qualified for GSP+.

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 10:29 AM

Who is concerning of whom? Don't they say wisely "look at your back yard first"?

Even kings and ordinary people freely give advise but never ready to accept one!

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 05:12 PM

Could you be first concerned about the Sri Lankans, who are in a worse plight than the Palestinians?

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 10:34 AM

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 10:35 AM

How can SL worry about Human Rights Laws and Humanitarian Laws, when she does not even accept their existence, in the first place?

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 10:38 AM

It reminds me of a good old saying " Kettle Calling the Pot Black"

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 05:46 PM

I am sure that this is to gain Muslim votes.

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 10:43 AM

Human rights champion (Sri Lanka??) is worrying about deteriorating humanitarian situation in Palestine!

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 06:50 PM

Encouraging to see so many people (both Sinhalese and Tamils) voicing one opinion. The SL government should first solve its own internal problems before poking its head into other people's issues.

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 07:44 PM

Expect Israel to react in the same way that we react, when we hear this kind of propaganda from the so-called "pro-separatist media."

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 08:03 PM

How about the humanitarian situation in Sri Lanka? Whenever the international community questions, you keep warning them not to worry about Sri Lanka and mind their own business. Now, you try to raise concern about Palestine?

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 09:13 PM

'Physician, heal thyself' first. The GOSL should 'hang its head in shame' before even thinking of uttering a statement of this nature.

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 09:30 PM

    "Sprat" teaching "whales" to behave.

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 09:46 PM

Are SL officials losing their minds? Who is talking about what?

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 10:24 PM

    WHAT ..... ?

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 10:34 PM

    Gosh, what a hypocritical country.

    Wednesday, 24 March 2010 10:36 PM

Joke of the century! First clean-up your own 'back yard'!
