As long as our people continue to drive like lunatics, thinking about getting there as fast as you can instead of safety, we will continue hearing about these unfortunate things in the future too.

This is unbelievable, it is not surprising accidents elsewhere. It is obvious that accidents are escalating without concerned authorities taking any action.

If this goes on very soon foregin countries will inmpose travel restrictions to Sri Lanka. Already UK has given a warning to British tourists about road safetly in Sri Lanka. We got to impose heavy fines now itself before it is too late.

looks like its ego and pride thats causing most of these accidents.. because road safety seems to be a thing of the past for most new and young drivers. and Most cops are blind to notice such drivers

The official U.S. site has this to say about driving in this country:
"Narrow two-lane highways, overloaded trucks, poorly driven buses and a variety of conveyances on the road, ranging from ox carts and bicycles to new four-wheel-drive vehicles, make driving dangerous."

Anyway Sri Lanka may have the highest number of head on coliisions of vehicles in the world because the roads are not split,

Sad Story. Hope we dont give a bad impression to Tourist.
It must be said that many Tourist are appalled at our indiscipline driving. Instead of having CCTV, why not deploy either the Army or Police to make sure that people drive in Lanes and for Buses and Three Wheelers to use the left lane. This way , we would smoothen traffic and we wont have indescriminate competition for Government buses and private buses as they are the causes for such bad raod behavior, causing all this mess. A proper system will hel the smooth floor and cause the unwanted congestion in Sri Lanka.

Calistus Jayatilleke Friday, 28 January 2011 08:21 AM
The driver must have been thinking at the rate he was driving the tourist could have easily ended up in Korea overland rather than flying for such a long time!

Are you really a Sri Lankan driver/pedestrian ? Have you seen how army and police vehicles go on the roads?
Gal Ibbaa Friday, 28 January 2011 10:39 AM
Driver thought his vehicle was a plane after seeing runway...
