The construction work on the northern expressway linking Colombo to Kurunegala, Dambulla and Kandy, will begin in January, Minister Nirmala Kotalawala said yesterday.

Under the first phase, the proposed expressway will be linked to the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway and will extend up to Kurunegala via Ederamulla and Meerigama, and then extended up to Katugastota in Kandy. The next phase will be the construction of the highway up to Dambulla.

Mr. Kotalawala, who is the Project Minister of Highways, told Daily Mirror that the expressway would be constructed in three stages under the concept ‘Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) with financial assistance from China.

“We will start work in January. We will also open the Galle-Matara stretch of the southern expressway in January. Simultaneously with this opening ceremony, we will start work on extending it up to Hambantota,” he said.

The minister said another expressway had been proposed between Bandaragama and Ratnapura while the stretch of the outer circular road up to Kaduwela would be commissioned in January. (Kelum Bandara)

The existing road from Bandaragama to Ratnaputa is of very good quality and less traffic. Dont think such a need for the next 10 years. But we shall encourage the motorists to do so

What happens to Kottawa to Paheliyagoda Highway? When is this getting completed? peole travelling from far ways has to exit from Kottawa then go to Borella then either enter Katunayake Expressway or go by normal road. This is rediculous. Finish one and then start the other one. Don't start road works to support your election campaigns...

A highway linking Ratnapura to Bandaragama will reduce unbearable high level road traffic.

    George Wednesday, 27 November 2013 10:29 AM

This is great but a real priority is to get a series of elevated expressways from around Bambalapitiya to Kottawa (E01) and to E02, also out to Panadura and Kaduwela. Without these the relatively short runs on the E's are negated by the cost of getting to them.

And sure the leaders are making money but this happens in every country in the world (ever heard of the $10 NASA pencil?), the main issue is the quality of work and prioritizing (E02 should have been before E01 and Colombo-Kuranagala should have been done before E01 as well.

Roads are good, But should evaluate the gain as well.
We do not want all poor people paying debts for rods that they never benefited with.

Kandy is not a business city and I have doubt on benefits.

I am not against development. this means loans, loans & more loans.

During the 30 year WAR, people were asked to stay putt due to the war now again stay putt due to development.

Shouldnt there be a balance drawn between development and cost of living? All this means our cost of living will sky rocket.

For a poor third world country like SL, where people are struggling to put food on the table, what can you do with an expressway which is being built from loans on very high interest rates that people in this country cannot afford. SL is not a first world economy like some of the western countries, and will struggle to survive.

Kandy- Colombo expressway has been spoken many decades back and nothing happened. The present and past parliamentarians have to be blamed. Kandy has not seen anything big happening. This is one of the most neglected cities in srilanka comparing to the developments taking place in other parts of the country. Just imagine the few schools in Kandy which are doing so well compared to the out put in other schools. Except for a very few Ministers like Aluthgamage others contribution has been very poor. I feel MR, should personally take interest and develop Kandy.

The bridge, which is the main entrance to the village, has already claimed the lives of 8 persons. Villagers say that although the foundation stone has been laid for constructing a new bridge, even that foundation stone can no longer be found.

    LankanAmerican Wednesday, 27 November 2013 04:43 AM

If you are talking about Colombo - Katunayake expressway, big portion of the cost had been spent on acquiring prime-land. Now government pays more than market-value for the people - which is good because money goes into the public and thus economy will too benefit.

This expressway is on Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis, so NO COST to the government. The contractor will get the ROI in 20 or 30 or 50 years. BOT is the way to go in developing expressways!
