The Karnataka High Court will hear the bail appeal filed by former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday after her advocates moved the court seeking a special hearing.

On Monday, the AIADMK supremo had moved an appeal challenging the order of the lower court convicting her in a disproportionate assets case. On Tuesday, when the case came up for hearing, senior counsel Ram Jethmalani pleaded that the appeal and bail plea be heard. However, the prosecution sought time to file objections stating that they have not received any notification from the state to appear in the case.

The prosecution also said they have not received any notice or any copy of the appeal. The vacation bench of the HC then adjourned the case to next Monday. However, in the afternoon, the advocates representing Jayalalithaa moved an application before the HC registrar-general for advancing the hearing.

They pleaded that the appeal and bail plea be heard on Wednesday. The registrar-general, with the permission of Chief Justice D H Waghela, then scheduled a hearing on Wednesday morning.

A CBI Special Court on Tuesday granted bail to Vivek Hebbar, son of Yellapur MLA Shivaram Hebbar, in connection with the scam in iron ore export from Belekeri Port in Uttara Kannada district. Though Vivek was granted bail, he can’t be released as there is one more case pending against him for his alleged involvement in selling inferior quality iron ore fines  to an exporting firm in Goa.

The court directed Vivek to produce a bond for Rs 10 lakh with two sureties and surrender his passport. It also directed him to appear before the CBI court once every month and not to tamper the evidence or influence the witnesses. It also granted bail to managing director of Dream Logistics, Prakash Hegade. Vivek was arrested by the CBI in 2013.

The chargesheet stated that Vivek’s firm had illegally exported around nine lakh tonnes of iron ore from Belekeri port. Vivek is the first to get bail among all the other accused in the case. (Source: Indian Express)
