Stating that they are receiving phone calls saying its organiser in Jaffna, Lalith Kumara Weeraraj who was abducted along with another member on Saturday had been killed, the Movement for People’s Struggle an organisation formed by the JVP dissidents called for a proper investigation to determine what had become of the victims.

Movement for People’s Struggle Convener Chamira Koswatte told a news conference today that they have been receiving phone calls informing them that Lalith Kumar had been killed but said the movement is yet to determine the victim’s whereabouts. “We don’t believe this information received through the phone but it is clear that his life is danger,” he said.

Mr. Koswatte said it is the responsibility of the government to determine what had become of him and Kugan Muruganathan who were abducted on Saturday.

He said Lalith Kumar’s father had received a phone call from an unidentified person asking him to get his son to stop his political activities in the north. The caller had actually told Kumar’s father that they will eliminate Lalith from politics if he (his father) does not stop him from engaging in politics.

Mr. Koswatte said the victim had received death threats asking him not to engage in politics in the North. He said the government officers in the area had also asked him not to engage in politics. Mr. Koswatte recalled that he was arrested once and was released. He said the victim was firmly told not to engage in politics by those who arrested him.

He ruled out the involvement of the JVP stating that they have no political power in the North to carry out such an activity in the North. Besides he said the JVP does not have such desires by any means to engage in such an act.

The Movement for People’s Struggle said they would take to the streets shortly calling for the release of the victims. Complaints have been logged with the Jaffna Police Station while Kugan’s wife had lodged a complaint with the Achuweli Police Station. (Yohan Perera)
