Newly sworn in Prime Minister D. M. Jayaratne said that he had been offered the premiership twice before although he dint get it due to political indifference. He also said that his appointment paper was valid for six years although it was up to the President to decide otherwise.

“I have not been told whether I’m appointed until the President’s old term in office is over. I will go whenever I am asked to by the President,” Jayaratne said.

Meanwhile during the presidential and general elections Jayaratne had said that he has a special suit to wear when he becomes prime minister and when queried on that he said that he did not wear it to take oaths. “That special suit was an Arya suit given to me. That was outdated and I can’t wear that. So I will stick to my present attire in what I took oaths,” Jayaratne said

What nonsense is he talking as fresh appointed PM ? Is DM already out of mind !!!

    Friday, 23 April 2010 06:39 AM

Except for the president and a handful of MPs, most of these people have no agenda to serve the country but themselves....

    Friday, 23 April 2010 05:50 AM

DM is with the SLFP since its inception which none in the present Parliament can boast of. So he deserves this position though under the present Constitution, it is only a peon's job as Ranasinghe Premadasa once put it when he was the PM under JR! - Nimal

Mr Premadasa made use of his office and made mountains out of mole hills. He started 'Gam Udawa', a house for every one, renovated Tower Hall - doing a peon's job, he pulled the public towards him.

DM's utterances are not in line with the status he is holding as Prime Minster of Sri Lanka. Sri Lankans would expect utterances with more depth.

Thanks PM for your comments. The whole country knows this a short time appoinment as SB is behind your back.We are happy you have been in the same party without jumping from one side to the other for benefits like SB and Carter from Gampola an so on.

At last the dream come true while in the depature lounge.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:01 PM

Dear DMJ do not worry you will be the next DBW.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 06:42 PM

He should have been the prime-minister much before. We, in the Kandy district, congratulate him!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 04:00 PM

MR remembers people who have helped him, whereas Ranil does not remember anyone he has met in the morning, by evening.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 03:43 PM

How do we know he will be the 2nd Mahinda Wijesekara, or Fernando Pulle?

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 11:48 AM

The comments I saw soon after his name was mentioned as PM were more positive. After his appointment why do I see so many negative feedback. It did not take even one dayfor people to change their minds. He did not have even one day in office to prove if he is the right person.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 11:00 AM

DM may have worked for the party for a long time and his loyalty is unquestionable. But the post of PM is a position which should not be given just to make somebody happy. There were hundreds of others who had sacrificed, probably much more than DM. So, the premiership should be taken off from him as soon as possible and give it to a capable younger person if the President wants the country to grow.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:59 AM

    Dear PM
Your appointment paper was valid for another one year. Good luck!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:59 AM

I really wonder what good a 78 year old Premier could do to this country. I believe this appointment is similar to that of Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike being appointed as the Premier during the CBK reign

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:51 AM

Guys please treat this old man to like your grand father....

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:36 AM

so, is this a STOP GAP appointment?

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:33 AM

What a waste of public money! He should just be happy and enjoy his good fortune rather than whining all the time!!!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:33 AM

DM is with the SLFP since its inception which none in the present Parliament can boast of. So he deserves this position though under the present Constitution, it is only a peon's job as Ranasinghe Premadasa once put it when he was the PM under JR!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:31 AM

This country is being ruined by the "reward and punishment" theory. IT IS NEVER THE RIGHT MAN FOR THE JOB. It will not be a surprise if Malini Fonseka ends up as the Finance or Foreign Minister!
At least some consolation that the UNP has thought it fit to appoint some professionals in the National List despite immense pressure to "reward" politicians.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:28 AM

"I will go whenever I am asked to by the President" - just another stooge until NAMAL takes over.

    :D

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:22 AM

wonder why political sources say that the PM will change after the president takes oaths in November.......

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 10:18 AM

This one is the best out of rest !

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:59 AM

Wishing you, good health with a vision for country. Don't be negative in your time period. Just think what you can do with great opportunity whether it is 6 years or 6months.
Sri lankans are fast getting a mind-set where they think these positions are luck of a person, and others just got to admire it n wait (though it is the reality). Wake up lankans, each one has a job to do, and role to play for better tomorrow. If that's not done, what use of a position or power? Pls do not fill 'bad-karma' to your journey.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:57 AM

Anyway MR has rewarded a faithful worker. That is a good attribute of the President. That is one of the many attributes missing in the current UNP leader.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:57 AM

Dear PM, Stop this lose talk and do what you can for the people who voted for your party. Also remember 40% did not vote.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:55 AM

Like DBW - term is short-lived. Only till November. Six months - not six year. After that BR is there to take over.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:46 AM

Is this what a premier should talk about - are these his priorities. What a waste of time at that level instead of addressing real issues.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:44 AM

Sri Lanka, get ready for some good laughs courtesy of our brand new PM.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:43 AM

Now you are 79. Do you expect work up to 85? Ayubowewa! Sir.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:41 AM

Appointment letter valied for 6 years......., by that time he will be 85 years old.

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:40 AM

    Good luck!

    Thursday, 22 April 2010 09:40 AM

Appears to have very high HOPES. But, mind you, according to LORD BUDDHA every thing is impermanent.
