The majority of the inspectors are proposing to implement a retirement scheme after completing 22 years of service as presently they have to retire when they reach 55 years of age or resign from service, highly placed police sources said.

“Comparing with the armed forces, police lags behind but maintains the same status and conduct a major role in the society to maintain law and order. But the scales are different,” a senior police officer said.

“The policemen will bring the issue and the proposal to Inspector General of Police (IGP) N. K. Illangakoon who is keen to discuss the proposals as it is a problem that should be solved and answered quickly,” he said.

Recently the Police Inspectors Association elected its executive committee and appointed Chief Inspector (CI) Chinthaka Gunaratne as the President.

The importance and need to have a retirement scheme for policemen when they complete 22 years of service to the police department was discussed by the association at the event.

The association consists of Chief Inspectors, Inspectors of Police and Sub Inspectors. The number of members is close to 8500. (Supun Dias)
