A UNP candidate who was to contest the upcoming General Election is seeking ten million Rupees from the Anuradhapura police as compensation for the physical harm they caused him while dispersing a group of protestors recently.

In a complaint to the Human Rights Commission, UNP Provincial councilor Rohana Gamage said that he has been hospitalized after sustaining serious injuries to his foot, allegedly following a tear gas attack by the police two weeks ago.

In the complaint filed through his family, Gamage said that he is now unable to campaign for the upcoming elections as a result of his injuries. Mr. Gamage was injured on February 12 when the police were forced to use teargas to disperse a group of protestors demanding the release of General Sarath Fonseka.  (Daily Mirror online)

He is the most suitable candidate to contest with the UNP ticket. Even before the nominations he demands money.

More than 50% of citizens need compensation for the things that are being done.

There should be legistlations brought and made legal to compansate any citizen affected by any Government or Public organization. This will curtail state terrorism.

Tear gas causes no harm to a foot. If cripples in wheel chairs can contest elections, why not a man with an injured foot. Must be a reject of the UNP, trying to make a quick buck..

Good show and appreciated very much. This is the way we should act in the future. Policemen are given (Political Powers) to harress people in the wrong manner. Let us teach a good lesson to the Police in the future.

Very reasonable. Every citizen of SriLanka should act like this and demand from our Idiotical Police Department who are the slaves of Mahinda's regime.

    He must be compensated.

Wise move. Looks like going for some popularity what matters at the end of the GE. He is one step ahead of all the other UNP candidates even before the nominations.

    good
however, these days hitting to people is their hobby.....

    Sunday, 21 February 2010 11:35 AM

Or he is not allowed to contest by UNP because he had supported SF.

    Sunday, 21 February 2010 10:48 AM

Why?? Need more money for the campaign??

    Sunday, 21 February 2010 10:39 AM

A very good move. People should fight against police brutality legally as Police are not licenced to maim or kill like 007.

    Sunday, 21 February 2010 10:13 AM
