A Sri Lankan MP has demanded that an Indian MPs' delegation, scheduled to visit the island nation for a week from April 16 to assess the resettlement and political process in war-torn areas, meet and talk to Tamils without any mediators.

Speaking at a meeting convened by Madurai Bar Association Madurai yesterday, S Shritharan (Tamil National Alliance), wanted the delegation also to inspect places like Mullivaikal, where final phase of the war against LTTE took place.

Though India had given assistance to construct 50,000 houses for Tamils, only 1000 had been built, he alleged. "Nearly 40,000 Tamils in the island nation were still living in refugee camps without basic amenities, including water and food", he said.

A refugee camp at Chettikulam was still fenced and refugees at Mullivaikkal had not yet been rehabilitated in their land, he alleged. "The government was moving Sinhalas into the Tamil areas to change the ethnic ratio in the Tamil region", he alleged and wondered whether the Sri Lankan Government would implement the UNHRC resolution seeking to demilitarise Tamil area, forumulating a lasting political solution to the Tamils issue and an inquiry into the crimes committed during the final phase of the war. Govt must talk to TNA; keep talking tho 14 rounds failed. After all what does TNA want - greater devolution with Police & Land powers to a merged N&E. Island progreses economically with Tamil suport. Expatriate investment will come in. Chauvinism wont inspire confidence to the Tamils.
Perhaps Tamils have to wait till Singalese realise they too r the much more civilised Dravidians who believe in dialogue & compromise & NOT Aryans who beleve in fighting & war to impose their will.

Buffaloa, from your paddy-field perhaps you can only see one side of the problem. What about reconciliation for the Tamil men, women, children killed by the Tigers?

    Sumedha Saturday, 14 April 2012 07:24 PM

Why were Sinhalese and Muslim families killed and removed from the North and the East when the LTTE was running amock in those areas? People who were originally there have to be rehabilitated as well. I'm so glad your name is what it is

India also produced Asoka. Not sure about Mahndha & Sangamitha which is not recorded history.

    Mason Saturday, 14 April 2012 05:57 AM

Most probably you guys from India will be taken on a guided tour, lavished with star class hotel treatment. You will go back and report that all is well in Sri Lanka.
Stay in India and do not waste your tax payers money.

India knows different between Sri Lanka and India. Sri Lanka introduced world's first woman Sirimavo Bandaranayake) prime minister where as India introduced first urine drinking (Moraj Desai) prime minister.

    Nodrog Saturday, 14 April 2012 02:29 AM

They should focus of their own issues at home like the starving, homeless and poverty stricken masses.....

Resetlement & political proces must be taken together; Tamils sufered under LTTE & IPKF for for over 2 dozen years.
Both processes must be fast tracked There is money & the expatriates r waiting to invest.
But sincerity & willingnes from the President is lacking. There is a programme of reducing historically occupied Tamil homeland in the N&East. The visiting delegation must have the freedom to visit the North & East & talk to the people without being shadowed by the army or govt people. But the Govt has a lot to hide. SL wil continue to be a failed state. Wil a regime change help I wonder.

    Rohan Friday, 13 April 2012 04:14 PM

What about the people who supported the LTTE with funds. Shouldn't they be investigated for war crimes? Why only the last stage of the war? Is it to cover up the atrocities of the LTTE and the supporting diaspora in killing thousands of innocent people including children.

It is only serve srilanka to buy time to colonise captured tamils land with singalese which HAD BEEN defended by ltte all these years .
Now it is well known who is who? and who must be charged for all of the holohaust in tamils land.
india as it has made itself small on the int. stage by being a Partner and even the propellar , want to stage another DRAMA by sending a bogus team!
    Cannot avoid being criticised.

buffaloa citizen Friday, 13 April 2012 09:53 AM

The past cannot be just erased, when many innocent indiscriminate deaths have taken perptratedly committed by a democratic government. All war criminals need to be booked and punished for real reconciliation to take place.

buffaloa citizen Friday, 13 April 2012 09:51 AM

Sinhalese, many from soldier families are settled by the GOSL in the north. Why cannot the GOSL begin a similar programme using LTTE cadres and settle them in Matara, Galle, Hambantota or even in Beliatta? That is why this is a racist regime.

    Bindu Friday, 13 April 2012 09:19 AM

    Dear Fusion/podiman,
100% Agreed, But please understand Govt sponsored Settlements are Unfair.
Why can't Singalese Rent/Buy properties in North and live?

    defRep Thursday, 12 April 2012 01:10 PM

anyone should be able to live in any part of the country regardless of the ethnicity, religion, cast, etc, etc....

    Saskia Thursday, 12 April 2012 03:43 PM

True, but tamil people are not brought by government to south or are not advised to move to south but, in case of singalees, the government facilitates them to move to north. Why??????

    Fusion Thursday, 12 April 2012 03:36 PM

Yup...it is a valid request. Otherwise those civilians can feel intimidated.

    mike Thursday, 12 April 2012 03:47 PM

Why you are talking like this?LTTE second in Command is with the government, and the Minister to solve your problems, then KP and Daya master and much more Tamil holding high positions. How many militants are free and enjoying a free life?Rehabiliation will take time as there are mines planted by LTTE.Let the delegation accompany Daya master,KP, and the Minister, let Lanka solve it's own problems within and among our Tamil brothers. We all equal citizens having the privilege to live any where in this tiny island and move as brothers in the same family. At last we don't want our country to go back to the past.

    podiman Thursday, 12 April 2012 03:27 PM

"Sinhala people to tamil ariea"- Then what about all the Tamils in the South.

Need mediators to protect the delegation from the white vans.

    Johnson Thursday, 12 April 2012 01:48 PM

How is that a valid request ?

How can there be any reconciliation with people like this ? They need to understand we are Sri Lankans first and race comes after. If they have problems they should first voice their concerns to the Sri Lankan brethren first. Not their cousins from India.

    osanda Thursday, 12 April 2012 01:32 PM

Why are they comming to SL , when there are so much to moniter in their own den,

    ravi Thursday, 12 April 2012 01:26 PM

Your correct sir I thing Indian delegation are well known about the SL government ..

    typical Thursday, 12 April 2012 01:11 PM
