The Indian government summoned Sri Lankan High Commissioner in New Delhi Prasad Kariyawasam and asked for an explanation on the shooting incident, where an Indian fisherman was allegedly killed in the high seas.

According to Indian media reports it emphasized that firing in such situations has no justification and had called on the Sri Lankan authorities to desist from use of force. India has asked Sri Lanka to adhere to the October 2008 understanding reached between the two governments and called on the Sri Lankan Navy to exercise maximum restraint and avoid use of force in such situations.

However, the Sri Lankan Navy has denied that they had fired and said they were assisting the fishermen to return into Indian waters.

It was reported on Wednesday that the Sri Lankan Navy opened fire on Indian fishermen in the Indian Ocean killing one and critically injuring another.

The firing reportedly occurred as the Lankans believed the fisherman were trespassing. But it is not clear whether the fisherman were in Indian territorial waters or in Lanka's, reports said.

Leave about their waters or our waters, after all they are ordinary men in the mid of the ocean hunting fishes for their daily survival. Is this the reason inspired SLNAVY to fire at? confirmly it is not a human behavior, nothing else whatsoever justification. didn't understand? assume yourself you are fisherman & somebody suddenly came and open fire at you with assault weapons.
Even pakisthan, respects the human value, they only arrest the person, but not killing brutally like this.

Tamils had been at the recieving end of systematic abuse in India as in sinking lanka. The Diaspora and Tamil Nadu have realiesd the folly of being "Diplomatic".
New Delhi's reaction and the manner they handle this murder will be watched closely by Tamils all over the world.

    Calm down.
Even India killed one of our Negombo fisherman while he was in Indian jail custody sometime back.

    chamara Thursday, 13 January 2011 01:43 PM

India openly supported LTTE terrorism in past. These are the results ! also, Indian fishermen forcefully enter to Lankan waters daily and steal our natural resources. No one in India talk about that & no action taken by Dellhi or Tamilnadu. we have a clear right to protect our land & seas ! accept that first and advise your fishermen before pointing fingers on us !

Sumithira Ranwala Thursday, 13 January 2011 01:20 PM

As the report says, "the Indian fisherman was allegedly killed". India has to produce the evidence to prove that it was the SLNAVY that killed the guy. There was a time when SL government raised concerned about LTTE training camps in Southern Indina, TN in perticular and India's answer was utter dinial. We all know what happaned after that. What goes arround, comes around India!
